Welcome to the THIRD ANNIVERSARY episode of the Curve the Cube Podcast!! Thanks so much for joining me on episode 120 where I feature one of my new best friends (seriously... I told her I was adopting her as my new little sister), photographer Nikyta Haynes!! Her brand is Kyta Beez and her tag line is "Definitely Different" and I can personally testify that this girl STANDS OUT!! I got to meet her at an art exhibit by long-time friend of the show, Jafleu. She was just walking around doing her thing and taking pictures. I had brought my son, Jordon, along with me and surprised him by bringing his camera, so he could take pictures, too. (He wants to be a photographer when he grows up, after all.) We ran into Nikyta while wandering the various photography studies and Jordon and I were both instantly taken by her. She was so kind to him, he loved her "cool" camera, as he put it, and they even took photos together in one of the professional studios. You simply don't meet kind people like that everyday. And, when she gave me a glimpse into her story, I just HAD to have her on the show! And, she was so nice in joining me at my Entrepreneur Influencers Brunch hosted by Style Chambers last weekend. My dad calls it my "bulldog" effect, and I'm going to break down what it means, the dos and don'ts of being relentless, why you shouldn't be afraid to hear "no" (and what to do when you DO hear it), AND my biggest tip for not giving up (which actually can help in any number of life situations, as a matter of fact). I know the practice of being relentless doesn't come easy for everybody. So the first step is to decide everyday that you will move forward. This latest Curve the Cube Podcast episode is all about the conundrum of working for free. Yikes!! But, beware--there are leeches out there you have to watch out for and it's easy to be taken advantage of. Guys!! I was invited to present recently at a Center for Autism and Related Disabilities at Florida Atlantic University's Career Day, and it was wonderful. One of my career goals is public speaking, and this was my first dive into it. I was such impressive company--other presenters including an environmentalist, event planner, comic book illustrator, creator of an online social community for the disabled, and a police officer. Curvists and new listeners, the foundation of a pursuit of dreams for many is the American Dream itself, and there is really no dream more emblematic or inspiring around the world than that beacon America has been as a place where hope meets hard work. But, we find ourselves at a time in our American history where masses of people feel like that American Dream is at grave risk for them. And, this election (and, for many, Donald Trump himself, is a driving force of either a promise newly lost or a promise newly regained. So, as I heard of an anti-Trump protest on Veterans Day right here in West Palm Beach (and, a bubbling counter-protest), I decided to head down there and see what those dreams are for people. There is a clear passion involved in both protesting and counter-protesting, and I wanted to get to the root of some of this passion. And, I was as struck by the diversity of answers as I was by the possible areas of common ground that seemed to surface. So, my hope with this episode is to allay fears, but inspire action; to propose areas of commonality, so we can focus on continuing to progress as a unified, strong country and world leader; and to help people understand one another's struggles better. We really need to stop living only in our individual pockets. As diverse of a country as we have, we need to step out and listen to one another more. Established Curvists and new listeners alike: your host and producer shares a message of the importance of doing what you dream on this episode of Curve the Cube! People get taken off their course in life for all sorts of reasons. But, whether as a hobby, a part-time gig, or as a full-time thing, doing what you love is simply vital to one's spirit, and we can't allow ourselves to forget that. I mean, the alternative is to live every day in black-and-white, instead of the vibrant color that could await you. And, since we all only get one walk through this life on Earth, we shouldn't waste it, right? In this podcast, I discuss not only the importance of feeding your soul with what you love, but to do so smartly and with measured risk, if, like me and some other curvists, your goal is to make a living off of your dream and your dream alone. If you're anywhere NEAR as big of a fan as I am of my FAVORITE movie of all time, The Neverending Story, then you will LOVE hearing me chat with Tami Stronach. (I mean, it's not every day you get to talk to a childlike empress!) And, it’s not every day you get to talk to a star you’ve admired for 30+ years on your 100th episode. I was absolutely beside myself. And, what a wonderful conversation we had! Tami is as equally driven as I am to spread the message of the importance of doing what you dream. In this podcast, we explore how the film for each of us (her as a participant and me as a spectator) has influenced our lives and encouraged us to do just that. She was absolutely delightful and just a pure joy to talk to. This podcast came about following an exchange she and I had on Twitter after I took my son to a special screening of The Neverending Story. It was a magical experience for me to see it on the big screen for the first time, to be able to pass on the hope of the film to my son, and to then have that experience connect me with Tami. Hi, Curvists! I really need to update you all on what's going on! There was no episode last week. (Eek!!) Well, there was a reason for that named Hurricane Matthew. So, I wanted to share with you all what is going on and what is coming up, including a new direction I am taking the podcast in. So, I'm excited to get into it!! I am working to reschedule with Jared Easely, founder of the Podcast Movement annual conferences and something called the Podcast Cruise, which I have no idea what it is, but it sounds amazing, and I can't wait to talk to him. I know a lot of you were particularly excited for that episode. We were supposed to record just before his podcast MeetUp of the Podcast South Florida a couple of Saturdays ago on the 8th. But, the venue had to cancel the event, due to the hurricane. So, that of course meant my podcast with him that was supposed to happen right beforehand has to now be rescheduled. So, we are working that out. Local small biz and digital marketing powerhouse, Kate Volman was to be on as well. She's a content creator and web show host who is on her way to taking over south Florida. She helps businesses share their stories as part of their marketing efforts, is super smart, and a lot of fun. But, we are having to reschedule, again because of things being just thrown off course, lol. But, both of those episodes are still coming up! So, because of recent events, I wanted to share with you a lesson I have learned about keeping my priorities in check. I am a big-time planner. Between my marketing company and clients and growing that, this podcast, my Podcast Network and sister shows, and the Palm Beach Podcasters, my to do list is gargantuan. So, I HAVE to be a big-time planner and schedule as much as possible weeks in advance. For the most part, this is a one-woman show. So, if I don't do it, it doesn't get done. I'm currently considering ways of reducing that workload, but that's for a whole other conversation. AND, I'm (most importantly, and as many of you know) also a single mom to a beautiful 4&1/2 year-old little boy, Jordon--my angel and whole heart. So, as you can imagine, he comes first, everything else comes second, friends and family get peppered throughout as much as I can, and then my needs usually come last. My plate is simply crazy-full! I had already put on pause pretty much all of my duties as the social media person behind the KVJ Show's fan accounts, KVJNation, because something had to give. I mean, that should tell you right there the fullness of my plate right now, if I've temporarily set aside something that I love that much. So, my cup already runneth over, and my body was suffering the consequences. Lack of sleep and healthier eating coupled with more stressors than I could speak of (all good things, but come on, let's get real, still stressful, right?), September turned into the Month of the Migraine, with my having more days WITH these debilitating headaches than not. In fact, at one point, I was in the fetal position for about a day and a half. It was awful. With everything suddenly being thrown off by the massive Hurricane Matthew having this area in its crosshairs, my schedule was thrown out the window, I had to scramble to get hurricane-ready because I had to make sure Jordon was well set, I had to set some clients up for the hurricane because, yes, hurricanes impact marketing efforts, too. So, everything was suddenly just completely nuts and unpredictable. After getting myself and my clients hurricane-ready, I still had so much more on my plate--even more than usual because of the total disruption that is a major hurricane. I had a choice to make, a fork in the road, so to speak. Have a complete panic-induced meltdown, or just accept it for the opportunity it was: the chance to relax. Sometimes in the hustle and bustle of the hustle itself, we get so caught in the momentum--especially when great things are happening, that we lose sight of the bigger picture. We pursue our dreams, ultimately, in the pursuit of happiness, right? Well, if my body is screaming at me that it needs rest, and that message is being delivered in the form of relentless migraines, mama is NOT happy. I looked around my room. With plywood covering the windows for the hurricane, it was like a cave--a perfect little recuperative nest free of light. So, once it was clear we had been spared by Matthew (thank GOD!!), I had Jordon spend a couple of days with his dad, so I could spend a couple of days under covers with an ice pack on my neck to knock out my migraine once and for all. I succumbed, and it was definitely the right decision. Not only did I reenergize, but it gave me a chance to step back and see the forest--not just the trees I was usually caught up in. I thought through how to move forward while making my rest more of a priority. So, I've taken some time to concentrate now on just finishing getting EHAH, a new podcast project off the ground. It's something some friends of mine and I have just recently launched where we talk about putting tech into our community and the community into our tech. But, getting it rolling has been a massive responsibility. And, being able to focus on finishing that rollout now while taking advantage of this gap in Curve the Cube, has taken a load of the pressure off! So, that podcast can give you an intro into my upcoming Curve the Cube episode with her! I have also made a decision with CTC that I hope you will all find interesting and appealing. I have decided to spend more episodes doing exactly what I'm doing now--sharing my own Curve the Cube journey. Since this podcast started as being all about inspiring people to pursue their dreams by talking to other people who are doing just that and has sprouted a shunt to this parallel story of me curving my own cube, I decided to start doing just what I'm doing here: sharing more of my own journey to curving my own cube. In episode 93, my amazing compadres, Scotty Fusion and Jessica Prestige, helped by cohosting and asking me a bunch of questions from themselves and some listeners. And, I think I caught a bug for it in that episode and really just want more personal interaction and conversation with you guys, my fellow Curvists, about what it is to pursue your dreams--stuff my guests have taught me about that pursuit and what I've been learning here as I navigate my own. In fact, on episode 4 of EHAH, which comes out October 25th, I talk a little bit about a recent decision I made on whether or not to archive my early episodes of Curve the Cube and why or why not. So, that was an interesting thought process I shared there. So, this slightly evolved structure will help me stress less about my guest scheduling and concentrate more on bringing better quality in overall content and audio. So, by adding in interviews with myself, it should help me be able to slow down and give better focus on post-production. But, have no fear! I am continuing to bring you great traditional CTC content, and once episodes start back up in the next week or two, I'll be back to posting episodes every week! In addition to the rescheduled guests, I also have other super inspiring people lined up to motivate you to find your passion and do your thing, too! Jennifer McGrath Tami Stronach Unnamed!! So, after spending a couple of years laying down a foundation, I was able to take a bit of a bolder step towards a career reset, and life refresh. Both for the time before a year ago and since then, my guests on Curve the Cube have been a constant source of excitement, inspiration, and motivation to know (unequivocally!) that I wanted that same passion and zest in life, and I was willing to work my butt off for it. It hasn't been easy, but it has been well worth it. As this podcast comes out today, I'm not sitting home burnt out from spending a week with the weight of drudgery. Rather, I'm exhilarated, having been immersed in the world of digital marketing all week, and I am tackling the world of podcasting with full gusto. This morning, I am recording my special birthday podcast, where I've had people turn the tables and ask me questions. This afternoon, I will be hosting the first meeting of the Egg Heads After Hours podcast, a new show I am cohosting with other tech movers-and-shakers in our community: Aaron Wormus (a Guy on Clematis), Kate Volman, and Eddy Garcia of Vivid Arts. Then, I'll be headed home to work on a client's video projects and some more podcast stuff--including planning the Palm Beach Podcasters relaunch MeetUp event! Sound exhausting? Nope... Best. Day. Ever. I will certainly feel more fulfilled laying my head on my pillow tonight than I did this same night last year. Sounds all well-worth it to me. Palm Beach Zoo’s Membership Manager, Amanda Joy, and Animal Curator, Amy Anderson, are two of the warmest, most lovely people I have ever met, and they made this podcast everything I could have hoped it would be and more! As we stood by the capybara exhibit (where I had to refrain from freaking out from pure excitement), these ladies shared their infectious enthusiasm for working with these wonderful animals. They conveyed the Zoo’s message and mission of conservation and education and how they see these animals in their care as ambassadors for their brethren in the wild. The sound of the Zoo’s animals all around us was just a symphony of confirmation of the beauty of our planet’s beautiful creatures. How much Amy and Amanda truly love and care for the animals is completely obvious. They have a true passion for what they do, and it was a privilege to have them on! I was absolutely delighted to see my old high school friend come back to the south Florida theater scene last March. David Abeles came through the Kravis Center on his Broadway tour of Matilda the Musical, playing the dominant and imposing role of Miss Trunchbull. I took my son to go see my friend do what I know he does best, and we were both so delighted by Dave’s performance and the entire cast and production! What a treat!! In this episode, I catch up with young and super-talented DJ & music composer, Alex Ariete! You may remember Alex as one of my very first CTC Kid from episode 11—back when he was known by his original stage name, DJ Pop Drop. Each time I see Alex out and about, it’s incredible how much he’s grown—physically and musically. Since we last sat down, Alex has continued to develop his skills as a musician—creating new original tracks, playing a bunch of gigs, traveling for different events and things, meeting amazing EDM mentors, and collaborating with different artists. On top of that, Alex continues to excel at his dance, competing regularly and doing very well! He’s simply a powerhouse of young, ambitious, and promising talent. Founder of Poetry In Motion Productions: (PIMP!), Jessica, now known as “Empress Prestige,” knows a thing or two about doing her own thing. She began what started as an unformed idea mass four years ago and worked it into what is now a thriving, repeat project of her own unique concept: ChoreoPoems. These are forms of dramatic expression that combine poetry, dance, music and song. She conceptualizes the overall story arc, directs the talent, and produces the overall program; but, what makes her plays so unique is that she leaves creative license for each role and its expression to the individual player. Essentially, the cast writes much of the content and she threads it together into a cohesive, intelligent expression of her story. Welcome to a BONUS episode of the Curve the Cube Podcast. It is just a bonus, but still very worthy of a number. So, it’s #84! It’s been a while since I’ve covered an event, and this was very impromptu, but still very fun. (To hear the last event I covered, you will have to rewind to episode #60 where I covered an art gallery opening and then pretty far back to episode #16 with the Shock Pop Comic Con.) In THIS episode, I get to geek out about the phenomenon of Pokémon Go! There is one local spot that is taking FULL advantage: The Palm Beach Zoo! They laid down some lures and transformed their park full of Pokéstops into a Pokémon trainer’s dream. Sending out a map ahead of time, the zoo primed the local masses to get their teams together and have a #PokemonGo invasion… and it worked!! A newbie trainer myself, I was SO JAZZED to get out there and go hunting for Pokémon. So, I had my map ready and spent a fun evening capturing Exeggcutes, Pinsirs, Poliwags, and TONS more. The fountain area was particularly littered. It was awesome!! I stopped along the way and talked to a couple of groups of fellow trainers who were kind enough to spare a few minutes for my questions. (Thanks, guys!) We talked about the sudden craze that is Pokémon Go, getting into teams, strategy, and how much the special event drew them to be at the zoo that night. It was awesome! There was live music, a Food Truck Invasion (shout out to Hoffman’s Chocolates!), and of course the wonderful and real-life Pokémon—the animals themselves! They absolutely remained the stars of the show!! I’m having a full podcast with some peeps from the Zoo in a couple of weeks. It’s slated to be episode #88 and released on August 8th; but, keep in touch over social media for updates—mostly on Twitter. But, aslo keep an eye out while playing the game yourselves! I’ve been an admirer of Estelle DeShocka’s photography for quite some time—watching her in action at various events and then seeing the amazing results online. She is quick on her feet and truly takes such great shots! I’m so glad that on this podcast, I got to finally talk to her more in depth about all the amazing photos she captures at other photo shoots and I then see her share through her various social media outlets. I had the pleasure of first meeting Paul Anthony at the invitation of a previous guest—Cohen Robinson—who was performing with a select group of local music talent he had gathered for his Sets in the West concert last month (catch episode #77). When I saw Paul perform, I was mesmerized. He oozes natural musicianship and was a polished performer. I was hooked and knew that I HAD to have him on the podcast! I met Jamie Scott Harris one random Friday when my son and I were out walking with a friend of ours and her dogs. He was meditating in the park and we eventually struck up a conversation about yoga, life, and purpose. By the end of it, I knew I had to have him as a guest! After pursuing a career in yoga instruction and finding himself in a new state, Jamie came to a new path of his journey through life. He discovered a transformational mentorship group called My Life My Power, and his life mission was suddenly and dramatically expanded. It was such a pleasure to catch up with my 8th guests (Cohen Robinson, Patrick Watkins, and Myles “Trufe” Robinson) after watching them wow the crowd at the Sets in the West Neighborhood Block Party this past Friday off of 5th Avenue in Delray! Not only did they put on a fantastic show, but they also showcased an even wider variety of talent—this time including reggae (http://www.PaulAnthonyReggae.com) and spoken word (@ByrdPoetry) performers, a full band, and Uzi—a local rap artist who joined us on this episode. We last recorded a podcast back on December 20th, 2014 after they opened up for Vanilla Ice; and, to see how much their musicianship has continued to accelerate was phenomenal. There was a quintessential Florida storm brewing that caused a power outage and eventually cut the set short; but, these guys didn’t miss a beat or let the energy drop. They made what could have been a complete bummer into a really beautiful moment. This episode starts off in my car with Cohen and Uzi on our way to the post-performance celebration, and we end up at Salt Seven off Atlantic Avenue. We had a fantastic time kicking back over cocktails and calamari as they basked in the afterglow of the stage. They are true professionals and even truer friends. You’re going to love this podcast!! My 75th episode was spent in the delightful company of Mr. Darius Murray, Clinical Mentoring Associate for FAU‘s CARD, or Center for Autism and Related Disabilities. His passion for helping the most vulnerable in our community was obvious from the start—particularly when he talks about CARD’s iRise2 Mentoring program, which pairs young protégés (ages 11-21 or 22) with mentors from all walks of life. We discuss what the autism spectrum is, particular challenges, the rising statistics, vaccines, and more. Darius has spent his life giving to others, having worked his way through the Homeless Coalition of Palm Beach County, AmeriCorps, and Big Brothers Big Sisters previously. So, he definitely had a lot to share with me about the importance of volunteerism generally. Mostly, though, we talk about the iRise2 mentoring program. He is very clear that ANYONE can be a mentor (after passing a background check, of course!), and that current mentors come from all kinds of backgrounds, skillsets, and interests. I met Jamaal “Visualist” Clark at an art event put on by Exhibit Treal a couple of weeks ago where he was photographing the evening. And, it turns out that he was also a painter who had lent a couple of pieces to the event—pieces that I LOVED. So, I was excited to have Jamaal on the podcast. Barry Bohnsack, Finance and Program Planning expert for the Orion ALTO Program, joined me by phone for this truly special podcast—one that I’ve been looking forward to for a long time! Barry works for Lockheed Martin, which is contracted to help build the Orion spacecraft, NASA’s deep space craft. Orion is on the brink of making history, heading next to the dark side of the moon to test human capacity to survive these types of missions. Once successful, Orion will be headed on a manned mission to MARS! How cool is that?!?! Barry started out being into all things space and science at a very young age, and realized there was a path for him to parlay his business acumen into a career at the Kennedy Space Center. As an ambassador to the First Robotics Competition, Barry and I first met a few weeks ago, where stopped by to support my previous CTC Kids guests, the Poinciana Elementary School’s Taz Bots from episode 70. And, I was so excited when he agreed to be on. On this podcast, Barry and I talk about the history of NASA, how he managed to live his dream of working there and his role as a project planner, the commonality of both being young astronautics and Lego lovers, and what the real benefits are to society garnered from space exploration. (Spoiler alert: LOADS of technological advances!!) He’s a lovely guy and not only did he shed some light on the budgetary considerations of the space program that come into play, but he also gave me fresh perspective on one of my favorite categories of movies: sci-fi. This week’s guest is Jeff DeMario, Chief Executive Officer of Vita Nova—West Palm Beach’s answer to the challenges kids face as they transition out of foster care and into adulthood. Through their services and programs providing housing, education, counseling, and life skills coaching, Vita Nova helps the kids in their organization through a lot of heart, hard work, and commitment. They are awesome!!) “Vita Nova” means new life, and that is what this selfless group of people give to these kids—self-esteem and the desire and knowledge to become productive, social human beings through endless support and communications. Think back to when you were 18 and all the challenges you faced still finding yourself while also discovering the world. Add in hormones and other typical physical and social issues that you faced. Now, subtract the structured support system that you likely had. Chances are, you would not have fared so well. In fact, here are some stats: Each year approximately 26,000 young adults "age out" of foster care in the United States, according to the Annie E Casey Foundation. Four years after aging out, 25 percent have been homeless, less than half have graduated from high school and more than 80 percent are unable to support themselves. I was DELIGHTED to meet with a group of kids who are competing in the First Lego League tournament circuit! Morgan Domeyer, Natasha Mayorga, Garrett Reardon, and Carsten Kjaerulff are from Poinciana Elementary and members of the “Taz Bots” team learning under the direction of their coach, Gloria Gibson. Each year, the FLL’s competitions focus on a different theme, and this year’s them is the Trash Trek Challenge. The kids and I discuss their recent competition in February, what world challenges they’ve been asked to think through and help tackle, the awesomeness that is Lego, what they like about robotics and coding, and more! They’ve earned their way to the next level of competitions happening in May: Morgan and Natasha are representing the team headed to the FLL Razorback International in Arkansas, while Garrett and Carsten are representing the team headed to the FLL Open European Championship in the Canary Islands, Spain. So, they have a LOT to look forward to with their upcoming trips and competitions! These kids are thoughtful, extremely bright, super sweet, adorable, and the future of robotics and engineering. Treal= true + real Utilizing the concept of “treal,” community leaders, Jason "JaFleu" Fleurant and Tracy Guiteau, are blazing a trail in our backyard to promote young, local talent—Exhibit Treal. They are both fine artists, and, as you’ll hear, Tracy also has a background in fashion design. But, they are also community leaders doing so much to share all they have learned in the bumps in the journey of an artist's life, be strong examples of fortitude, and really inspire and support the community's youth. I recently had the absolute honor of sitting down with America’s premier underwater wildlife photographer, Chris Guglielmo (or simply "Gug," as he is known in most circles). Gug is one of those rare individuals who was gifted with a passion at an early age that he has continued to grow and excel at. He has been diving and photographing marine life since he was 15 years old, and in this podcast he talks about planning and conquering his shots, the secret to his vivid colors, and demystifying some common misconceptions. My podcast with Pres. Elhosseiny of the Islamic Center Palm Beach and Rev. Wendy of St. Joe's Unplugged was PHENOMENAL!! I thank them both so very much for participating. The goal going into the conversation was to explore how we as a people and our faiths have so much more in common than we do in difference; but, we ended up finding and connecting on so much more! Listen and learn about the TRUTH of #Islam, not what the terrorists and those who fear-monger want you to believe. "The word itself, 'Islam,' comes from the root word, 'salam,' which means, 'peace.'" Unfortunately, due to those in this world who have hijacked the Islamic faith and committed terribly heinous acts in its name, there are many people who fear ALL Muslims. Just recently, Sharif’s Center was the victim of that fear—having been vandalized in the middle of the night. In the vandal’s wake, the Center’s surrounding community offered cards, flowers, and other sentiments of support. This last Saturday, Sharif hosted an open-house to condemn terrorism and invite questions of the public, featuring guest lecturer, Abu Muhammad Al-Maghribi, visiting Imam of Masjid Tawheed in Stone Mountain, GA. ("Masjid"means Mosque in Arabic.) I attended the open-house and arrived to a peaceful and beautiful community atmosphere that surrounded me with so many warm, smiling, happy, and welcoming Muslim faces! It was a packed house, and MANY people stepped up to the open mic with their questions. The visiting Imam answered them BEAUTIFULLY!! Here are a few of his quotes: Thank you, ICPB, for opening your doors to the public to better understand Islam!! It was also wonderful to meet Liz Balmaseda from The Palm Beach Post as she was covering the story, and I encourage you all to read it!! On this episode, I caught up with an old high school friend from Pine Crest, Heather Geronemus, who is now the Chairwoman for the annual Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K. She has dedicated the last several years of her life to the important cause of fighting drunk driving; and her efforts have taken her from south Florida to the halls of Washington D.C. Heather has earned achievement as a top fundraiser for Mothers Against Drunk Driving; but, her philanthropy doesn’t stop there. She has also extended herself to other organizations as well. The topic of drunk driving is particularly poignant for this time of year, as drunk driving incidents tend to spike during the holidays. So, it was very important for me to have Heather on as a guest—especially now. She was gracious enough to talk about the personally tragedy that changed her life—losing her father, Robert, who was killed in 2009 by a drunk driver. She told his story, shared what that time was like for her, and walked through how she is changing such an extreme negative into such a powerful positive. As many of you may well now know, the purpose of Curve the Cube is to inspire people to pursue their dreams and passions--whether full time, part time, or simply as a hobby. This is my "love letter" submission to Libsyn's "Thanks, Podcasting" project--a collaboration I am so excited, thankful, privileged, honored, and proud to be a part of! Curve the Cube started as a small seedling of a concept, and I honestly did not know where I would take it; but, it has turned out to be more of where IT has taken ME!! Welcome to my 50th episode, Curvists!!! I celebrated this milestone with Renaissance man, Peter Agardy—cofounder of Saltwater Brewery, fine artist, and environmentalist. Peter and I talk about what goes into the making of a craft beer; from the infused ingredients to the barrel the brew is stored in, it’s a real science. Peter described the roots of the brewery and how it got off the ground, all the fun events they plan there—including trivia nights, live music, Sunday brunches, and more. As an added bonus, a super yummy food truck is pretty much always parked outside; and, after you taste a brew or two, ask about their Brewery tours. The place is a real experience!! However, the backbone of the Brewery is not only the creation of craft beer, but also their heart of charity and love of our oceans. On top of his other great talents, being an artist is in this man’s blood just as much as the salt life and love of craft beer. What a fun podcast this was with Jason Hackett of WPTV!!! Jason and I yuck it up throughout pretty much the entire thing! We met up at the Vivid Arts App kickoff party for previous guests, EGee Labs, at Le Rendez-vous, and simply had a great time. His spoke very affectionately about every crew he’s worked with, acknowledged that he has a responsibility on air as a black role model, and LOVED (not!) that I found out which fun kids’ spot he worked at in his early years. We took a pretty serious turn early in the discussion to talk about Corey Jones—the latest case focusing the national discussion of excessive force by police. All of these stories from Zimmerman to Ferguson on forward have hit close to home for both of us; but, now it was actually in our own backyard. His coverage of the peaceful rally of family, friends, and other supporters of Corey Jones was exceptional, and his take on it from his various perspectives was highly insightful. In the end, he turned the tables on me with a question that lead to a complete and utter GEEK OUT by us both, and I’m still stunned that he knew as much on that topic as I do. So, you’ll have to wait for that little nugget of podcast goodness. But, his facial expressions (and the adult beverage I was sipping on) had me laughing through the entire conversation. Texas transplant best known for her cozy mystery series, the Black Cat Bookshop Mysteries, Ali Brandon (a.k.a., Diane Stuckart) is a New York Times best-selling author! There are four books currently in the series, with the fifth book, Plot Boiler, to debut November 3rd: Just like her creator, protagonist Darla Pettistone is also a Texas transplant; but, she has found herself the heir of an independent bookstore housed in a New York brownstone and complete with a clever black cat full of attitude named Hamlet. In each book, a character meets an untimely end, and Darla and her sleuthing cat are on the case! I was so privileged to receive an advanced signed copy of Plot Boiler from Ali herself; I’m three chapters in and completely hooked!!! It is full of thoughtfully-crafted and colorful characters and is an absolute page-turner!! Under the name Diane A.S. Stuckart, Ali has penned the award-winning Leonardo da Vinci historical mystery series (currently available as e-books) and has written several historical romances under other pseudonyms. As a main face of the WPBF Channel 25 Weather team, Sandra Shaw is a leader in the field of meteorology and an inspiration to determined young scientists everywhere!! Sandra first found her passion in the news through investigative reporting—covering big stories from fraud to human trafficking; but, Sandra found her true purpose and passion in the midst of covering hurricane Katrina back in 2005. Raised in Texas, Deshon Allen parlayed his gymnastics and performance background into a spot as a college cheerleader, and he fell in love with it!! Deshon has had his own significant accomplishments in the world of cheer, such as becoming an All American Cheerleader AND a Collegiate Championship Cheerleader. However, his love of being in the spotlight is second to his love for building up others and his community. Not only has Deshon created a solid career for himself in the world of cheer, currently working as the Director for the Palm Beach Makos Cheerleaders, but he has also built himself a solid reputation as a man around town who has the drive to get things done! Sara Trovinger discovered her creativity at an early age and was encouraged to explore it as much as she was trained in harnessing it. She is a prolific musician and soon-to-be novelist—both of which make her pretty special. However, what makes Sara so particularly lovely is that she has decided to utilize her talents for the care of our most vulnerable children; she is a special education teacher. Working with children who are medically fragile, wide-ranging developmentally, and full of life that can be difficult to unlock is a practice that Sara admits is challenging and oftentimes heavy. Carlos Aleman is a Cuban-American man hailing from New York who makes his home now in south Florida—pursuing his creative passions of art and writing. He is prolific in his art production—it simply lives within him; and, his novels have been not only well-received, but critically acclaimed! I find his scope of talent as fascinating as someone who can play a bunch of instruments—it’s simply part of his DNA. The concept of his upcoming art exhibit is Dark Chocolate—essentially exploring the beauty of our differences that really make us all the same. It’s simply a beautiful message, and I hope everyone heads out to his exhibit! It will be on August 28th starting at 6:30pm at the Sunrise Civic Center. A young breakout indie pop star, Brie Goldsobel bubbles with talent, positivity, and purpose! She is simply a delight to be around and an amazing performer to see in action. And, she already has several tours and achievements under her belt. Aside from her own performance schedule, Brie has also toured as an opening act for Aaron Carter, been named 'Breakout Pop Artist of the Year' in 2014, been a finalist in the 2015 Recording Academy's Grammy Showcase, and written and recorded with Alex Cantrall (JoJo, Dru Hill). She’s had a song, “Dive In,” featured in the movie Cowgirls And Angels 2: Dakota's Summer, and even been written up by MTV. But, what TRULY sets Brie apart is her constant use of her microphone as a podium for positive social change. She has bravely used her artistry to raise awareness about bullying and is now working to fight against human trafficking. My dear friend, Drew, opens up with me on this podcast about his journey as a female-to-male transgendered individual—the physical, financial, social, and emotional impact and struggles the transgender life brings. Simply speaking, it is not easy. Imagine all the rigors and stresses of everyday life compounded and magnified by the very body you are in being at odds with both your mind and society’s expectations. Every step out into the world to tackle those everyday tasks becomes an awkward dance of considerations: how you dress, how you act, who to talk to, etc…--all because your gender identity is more complex than the XX versus XY boxes we have been accustomed to. The purpose of Curve the Cube is to inspire people to pursue their dreams by interviewing and picking the brains of those who are living their dreams. Typically, topics of the podcast stay within the realm of professional or hobby-like passions: owning a business, supporting yourself as an artist, etc… However, I can think of no dream pursuit that requires more literal blood, sweat, and tears than that of a transgender person trying to find their way into the right body and out of the shadows. Most of us are very lucky. The journey into a body that physically matches the mind inside is usually accomplished for us in the privacy of a womb—without any effort on our part whatsoever. For some, though, that journey is public and arduous. I can’t thank my friend, Drew, for not only sharing his story, but also being so open and honest. He has asked to remain anonymous due to his professional pursuits, which is just an honest reflection that there is more understanding and acceptance to come from our society. This is definitely the longest podcast episode thus far, though I tried to edit it down for time as much as possible. The message is just so important and involves so many elements I never before considered, that I wanted Drew’s story to be told as fully as I could. I encourage all to hear the whole episode! When Janice first moved to south Florida from New York, she was fully surprised to find that the natural hair movement making afros and dreadlocks a nondescript commonality in the Boroughs hadn’t yet found its footing down here. Janice sought to change that. A child of Haitian immigrants doesn’t often believe that a sustainable living as an artist is even conceivable. But, Jason "JaFleu" Fleurant is a prime example of a person breathing a dream to life one creative step at a time. And, it’s not all about courange for Jason (“JaFleu” as he is known in artistic circles). No, it is simply his undeniable NEED to paint—to create—to express. Zach Rance is a great example of a person living out loud, in the moment, and 100% as himself. From deciding to enter the world of “reality” television in the Big Brother house to now putting much of his life on a live stream through younow.com, what you see with Zach is what you get. He speaks his mind, wears emotions on his sleeve, and doesn’t give a crap what people think.
What I find most fascinating about Zach, however, is how determined he is to build his own successes and how he has thought outside the box to do it! Though he didn’t strategize for his #BB16 afterlife before going into the house, through using social media and capitalizing on his creative thinking, Zach has managed to maintain and build his online following of fans, affectionately referred to as “Zacharoos.” On this podcast, he shows these fans much love, talks a bit about his family, lets out some feelings about the House, and much more. Holy cannoli, #KVJNation! I am sooo happy to bring you this anniversary treat: a BONUS Curve the Cube podcast episode especially for you!! We started a campaign a year ago to bring back our favorite morning radio show, the KVJ Show, and WON! So, though this audio was recorded at the South Florida Fair back in January, its release (and Kevin Rolston’s permission to finally do so) is just perfectly timed! So, what happens when you combine Kevin, a voice recorder, and a fiesty KVJ Nation interviewer named Shawntai? GREAT audio!
After hearing this, there should be no more doubt or naysaying as to the Show’s motivation (and NEED) to make a move to Miami. Episode #19 features Jason of the KVJ Show! This radio personality truly is an ultimate example of taking life by the horns and riding that thing to the fullest! He became a member of the show through a random chance at a contest, and the rest is history!
Jason brings the weirdness level of the show up several notches--doing stunts involving everything from a pelican to a MASSIVE container of popcorn. (These two were never in the SAME stunt; so, no worries.)
He wraps his personal hobbies into the show, as well. Jason has a production company he calls Sasquatch Recordings through which he releases the most peculiar, quirky, and ultimately funny and entertaining music, videos, and movies. (Yours truly dies in one of them; so check out his stuff, also looking up "The Value Meal Killah and the Snack Pack," to see it for yourself!) His "Elf on the Shelf" "tribute" song, "What Does the Elf Say?," even garnered him some out-of-state death threats!

Transplanted in the 90s, Jennifer and Phoebe promised West Palm the most authentically New York pizza experience. They soon realized their newfound love of Florida, and have been delivering on that promise ever since! The 2015 Shock Pop Comic Con was off the CHAIN, and I got some FANTASTIC audio!!! I got to meet stars from some of my FAVORITE iconic movies and TV shows, like American Horror Story, Gremlins, The Karate Kid, Sons of Anarchy, Friday the 13th, and more!!! Oh… my… gosh… my mind is still blown!!! I asked Naomi Grossman about transitioning between two completely different seasons on American Horror Story, met Ari Lehman, the ORIGINAL Jason Voorhees ON Friday the 13th, got an autograph of Ralph Macchio for a friend, and did sooooooo much more! I even picked up a light-up Hello Kitty t-shirt. I mean… it was INSANE!!! This was my virginal Comic Con experience, and I’m so glad my brother got to come in town to experience it with me. We had an absolutely incredible time!!! We even got to talk to Dr. Who AND witness an interview with G.E.A.R. Radio and Robert Englund up close and personal. It was AWESOME!!! Enjoy these bits and clips from my interactions with iconic celebrities and impressive cosplayers, then beginning dreaming of and planning YOUR trip to SPCC. This super-short podcast is my first multi-guess-cast and features three extremely talented up-and-coming hip-hop artists, Cohen Robinson, Patrick Watkins, & The Trufe! Cohen and The Trufe (a.k.a., Myles Robinson) are brothers; but, they have been friends with Patrick since they were kids. So, they consider themselves all brothers. Whether working together on their group or doing their own individual projects, Cohen, Patrick, and The Trufe always support each other—and tonight was just another example. Cohen Robinson had one a singing contest that gave him the opportunity to open for the Vanilla Ice Block Party, and Patrick and The Trufe collaborated with him on the performance. This podcast was recorded backstage right after their set, where it was crazy loud, energetic, and surreal. This fifth episode of the podcast is the second “phone”-cast, and features young author and rising entrepreneur, Houston Gunn!!! Houston is just 17 years old, and has already authored TWO books on reaching for success, started his own publishing house, met Donald Trump, and has a goal of graduating high school as a millionaire! He’s dabbled in real estate and private lending, while also moved to Nashville from Seattle in order to cultivate his musical career. Have I mentioned that he has yet to graduate from HIGH SCHOOL?!?!?! INCREDIBLE!!! The amount of insight this kid has already developed is PHENOMENAL, and he has some really choice pieces of advice for others looking to succeed at making their own way. He talks motivation, hard work, overcoming fear, and pursuing your passions. There is just so much great advice gleamed from this young man in this podcast, its awe-inspiring; and, whether young or old, everyone can learn something from this guy! I am so jazzed for all the possibilities that this podcast has inspired, too. This kid is so impressive, I’m now considering producing a special series of “next generation” podcasts for other amazing young up-and-comers. In our chat, Jay gives some really inspirational insights into how he pursued his career and was able to break into such a huge, hot market. This podcast was sooo much fun to record! Andrea really came to have fun!! She has been in the entertainment industry for 15 years, and has had a breadth of experience and successes. She is currently (amongst many other things) the arena host and reporter for the Florida Panthers and is spreading her wings in the world of acting. Andrea has touched just about every corner of the entertainment industry, and now is focused on growing her company and relaunching her blog, Media-Gypsy, which focuses on helping others pursue THEIR dreams. We sat down with some wine, and she got REAL!! Andrea talks about her entry into the industry through dancing and cheering for the Miami Dolphins, the struggles of coming up, and her future goals. We got into the pressures that women face in particular in entertainment, the pitfalls that people in general often face, and what it really takes to keep the gears running toward success. She was a delight, seriously funny, and allowed me the opportunity to totally geek out with her about horror movies and zombies.
