#56 – FAITH – Sharif Elhosseiny & Rev. Wendy Tobias - 2015-12-18

Sharif Elhosseiny, President of the Islamic Center of Palm Beach, and Reverend Wendy Tobias of St. Joseph's Episcopal Church on the Curve the Cube Podcast

My ‪‎‪podcast‬ with Pres. Elhosseiny of the Islamic Center Palm Beach and Rev. Wendy of St. Joe's Unplugged was PHENOMENAL!! I thank them both so very much for participating. The goal going into the conversation was to explore how we as a people and our faiths have so much more in common than we do in difference; but, we ended up finding and connecting on so much more! Listen and learn about the TRUTH of ‪#‎Islam‬, not what the terrorists and those who fear-monger want you to believe.

"The word itself, 'Islam,' comes from the root word, 'salam,' which means, 'peace.'" Unfortunately, due to those in this world who have hijacked the Islamic faith and committed terribly heinous acts in its name, there are many people who fear ALL Muslims. Just recently, Sharif’s Center was the victim of that fear—having been vandalized in the middle of the night. In the vandal’s wake, the Center’s surrounding community offered cards, flowers, and other sentiments of support.

This last Saturday, Sharif hosted an open-house to condemn terrorism and invite questions of the public, featuring guest lecturer, Abu Muhammad Al-Maghribi, visiting Imam of Masjid Tawheed in Stone Mountain, GA. ("Masjid"means Mosque in Arabic.) I attended the open-house and arrived to a peaceful and beautiful community atmosphere that surrounded me with so many warm, smiling, happy, and welcoming Muslim faces! It was a packed house, and MANY people stepped up to the open mic with their questions. The visiting Imam answered them BEAUTIFULLY!! Here are a few of his quotes:
"[We] do not let a few terrorists hijack our faith, our ‪#‎Islam‬."
"Isis [and other groups] are renegades. They are criminals. They are terrorists."
"I don't blame the non-Muslims for their fear.... We hate [the terrorists] more than you do."

Thank you, ‪‎ICPB‬, for opening your doors to the public to better understand Islam!! It was also wonderful to meet Liz Balmaseda from The Palm Beach Post as she was covering the story, and I encourage you all to read it!!

Our cultures, faiths, and people DO have much more in common than they do in difference. Hear one another and curve the cube with open hearts and open minds. ‪ Love is greater than fear‬!!

#54 – NON-PROFIT (MADD) – Heather Geronemus - 2015-12-04

Heather Geronemus of Walk Like MADD and MADD Dash 5K on the Curve the Cube Podcast

On this episode, I caught up with an old high school friend from Pine Crest, Heather Geronemus, who is now the Chairwoman for the annual Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K. She has dedicated the last several years of her life to the important cause of fighting drunk driving; and her efforts have taken her from south Florida to the halls of Washington D.C. Heather has earned achievement as a top fundraiser for Mothers Against Drunk Driving; but, her philanthropy doesn’t stop there. She has also extended herself to other organizations as well.

The topic of drunk driving is particularly poignant for this time of year, as drunk driving incidents tend to spike during the holidays. So, it was very important for me to have Heather on as a guest—especially now. She was gracious enough to talk about the personally tragedy that changed her life—losing her father, Robert, who was killed in 2009 by a drunk driver. She told his story, shared what that time was like for her, and walked through how she is changing such an extreme negative into such a powerful positive.

If you want to get more involved in charity work and philanthropy, better understand the epidemic of drunk driving or have been an offender of DUI, or just need the inspiration to get through your own rough time, this podcast will speak to you in particular. Heather also shares tips on how to get home safely, including peppering in some great conceptual themes that will get you thinking. (Hint: parents, you may want to write some of these down…!!)

Head to WalkLikeMADD.org/FortLauderdale and see how you can get involved, as a sponsor or participant. Her next event’s info is:
Where: Huizenga Plaza 32 East Las Olas Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, Florida
When: 04/24/2016 @ 7:30 am
But, the time to create or sponsor a team and begin your fundraising is NOW!!

Curve the Cube - Thanks, Podcasting 2015

Curve the Cube - Thanks, Podcasting 2015 with Libsyn

As many of you may well now know, the purpose of Curve the Cube is to inspire people to pursue their dreams and passions--whether full time, part time, or simply as a hobby.

This is my "love letter" submission to Libsyn's "Thanks, Podcasting" project--a collaboration I am so excited, thankful, privileged, honored, and proud to be a part of!  Curve the Cube started as a small seedling of a concept, and I honestly did not know where I would take it; but, it has turned out to be more of where IT has taken ME!!  While driven to inspire others by interviewing those pursuing their dreams to share how they are doing it, I've realized that I am curving my own cube.  It's been a fantastic journey of meeting new people, professionally networking, and strengthening relationships, and I'm just getting started!

Curve the Cube celebrated it's one-year anniversary last month, and I promise it was just the first of many.

I must give a HUGE thank you to Libsyn, my guests, listeners, and sponsors for all their support!! Please visit my sponsors page for more info on these wonderful people.

See you on the other side of the curve!! Enjoy!

#52 – CTCKids – MUSICIANS – KRUSH - 2015-11-17

KRUSH Kids Band on the Curve the Cube Podcast!!!

To experience a KRUSH show is to feel something akin to a type of harmonic vertigo that you never want to end. Your ears LOVE what they are hearing, but your eyes compute it as too good to be true! A pre-teen classic rock band that oozes with talent, KRUSH consistently prompts double-takes from those who experience them for the first, second, and (often) every time. With individual accolades earned, these bandmates have combined their talents to impress judges and audiences alike, earning them two Battle of the Bands wins, a strong local fan base, and the attention of music legends!

KRUSH consists of:
• Nicholas (Nicky) Rothschild - Lead Guitarist (10)
• Ben Meller - Lead Singer (11)
• Landon Caballero - Bassist (12)
• Tristan Yeagar - Drummer (12)

But, don’t let their ages fool you. These kids, while quintessential roughhousing, fun-loving boys, are also highly committed to their craft—devoting hours each week to their music, the Band, and each other. To know them is to love them; but, to see them perform is to be in pure awe!

#50 – NIGHTLIFE – Peter Agardy of Saltwater Brewery - 2015-10-27

Peter Agardy of Saltwater Brewery on the Curve the Cube Podcast

Welcome to my 50th episode, Curvists!!! I celebrated this milestone with Renaissance man, Peter Agardy—cofounder of Saltwater Brewery, fine artist, and environmentalist. Peter and I talk about what goes into the making of a craft beer; from the infused ingredients to the barrel the brew is stored in, it’s a real science. Peter described the roots of the brewery and how it got off the ground, all the fun events they plan there—including trivia nights, live music, Sunday brunches, and more. Head to their website to stay on top of their events! As an added bonus, a super yummy food truck is pretty much always parked outside; and, after you taste a brew or two, ask about their Brewery tours. The place is a real experience!!

However, the backbone of the Brewery is not only the creation of craft beer, but also their heart of charity and love of our oceans. Peter shares info on all the charities they support and why/how they give back to our community and environment.

On top of his other great talents, being an artist is in this man’s blood just as much as the salt life and love of craft beer. Peter’s fine art presents super vivid underwater scenes that make you feel transported into a snapshot of the ocean itself. Look it up on his website; while browsing, look for the video of his creating the painting now seen on the Brewery’s Screaming Reels can. So cool!!

After we wrapped up the podcast, Peter gave me a tour of the Brewery, and I got to see firsthand where all the deliciousness is made. This wasn’t captured by audio; but, you can head to the Brewery website and check their tour schedule. Go see it for yourself! At the very end of this episode, you’ll hear him walk me through a tasty flight of four of their craft beers. Mmmmm…

#49 – Multimedia Journalist – Jason Hackett - 2015-10-24

Jason Hackett of WPTV on the Curve the Cube Podcast

What a fun podcast this was with Jason Hackett of WPTV!!! Jason and I yuck it up throughout pretty much the entire thing! We met up at the Vivid Arts App kickoff party for previous guests, EGee Labs, at Le Rendez-vous, and simply had a great time. His spoke very affectionately about every crew he’s worked with, acknowledged that he has a responsibility on air as a black role model, and LOVED (not!) that I found out which fun kids’ spot he worked at in his early years.

We took a pretty serious turn early in the discussion to talk about Corey Jones—the latest case focusing the national discussion of excessive force by police. All of these stories from Zimmerman to Ferguson on forward have hit close to home for both of us; but, now it was actually in our own backyard. His coverage of the peaceful rally of family, friends, and other supporters of Corey Jones was exceptional, and his take on it from his various perspectives was highly insightful.

In the end, he turned the tables on me with a question that lead to a complete and utter GEEK OUT by us both, and I’m still stunned that he knew as much on that topic as I do. So, you’ll have to wait for that little nugget of podcast goodness. But, his facial expressions (and the adult beverage I was sipping on) had me laughing through the entire conversation. It was simply soooo fun!!

One note of correction: I meant to say “Downy,” not Febreeze!! (You’ll know what I mean when it gets there, lol.)

In each book, a character meets an untimely end, and Darla and her sleuthing cat are on the case! I was so privileged to receive an advanced signed copy of Plot Boiler from Ali herself; I’m three chapters in and completely hooked!!! It is full of thoughtfully-crafted and colorful characters and is an absolute page-turner!!

Under the name Diane A.S. Stuckart, Ali has penned the award-winning Leonardo da Vinci historical mystery series (currently available as e-books) and has written several historical romances under other pseudonyms. Along with explaining the name changes in the podcast, Ali talks about what it takes to really sit down and write a book, what it was like to first get published, and how she became a best-seller!

#47 – CONGRESSWOMAN – Rep. Lois Frankel - 2015-10-19

Congresswoman Representative Lois Frankel on the Curve the Cube Podcast

Congresswoman Lois Frankel’s dedication to public service was born of an innate passion within her to advocate for others. Through standing up to childhood bullies, protesting for social change in the 60s, and tackling the challenges in public office, Rep. Frankel has been on a mission. She has spoken up for people’s rights at every turn and believes strongly in the American dream being accessible to all. Representing her constituents true wishes is of the utmost import to her, and she has made keeping herself engaged in constant conversations with the public a top priority.

I personally found Rep. Frankel to be inspiring, passionate, and a very humble role model. She has a heart for leadership and a compass pointed toward justice that guides her every move. I was simply in awe of her and felt so honored to have had this inspiring conversation with her—particularly as the anniversary episode of the podcast!

#41 – MUSICIANS – Chemradery - 2015-09-05

Chemradery on the Curve the Cube podcast

When vocalist Gregory Scot Dyer first sat to collaborate with guitarist and seasoned touring musician Ivan Alexander, the chemistry was undeniable and Chemradery was born!  When I sat to talk to them for this podcast, that natural flow of friendship and collaborative, positive energy was obvious and very endearing.  Greg and Ivan are equally enjoyed in the middle of a crowd while they command a big stage as they are simply conversing face-to-face.  Their energy and presence draw you in and their music keeps you coming back for more!

Hear them share with us how they came together, what inspires their music, how they hustle through the scene of south Florida, and their future plans; it’s simply an episode not to be missed!!!  Please support this amazing band by downloading their music, coming out and seeing their shows, and following them on social media:

#40 – METEOROLOGIST – Sandra Shaw - 2015-08-25

Sandra Shaw on the Curve the Cube Podcast

As a main face of the WPBF Channel 25 Weather team, Sandra Shaw is a leader in the field of meteorology and an inspiration to determined young scientists everywhere!!

Sandra first found her passion in the news through investigative reporting—covering big stories from fraud to human trafficking; but, Sandra found her true purpose and passion in the midst of covering hurricane Katrina back in 2005.  So, on this 10th anniversary of that pivotal moment in her life (and, as we are facing Erika, our first major storm in 10 years), the timing of having Sandra on the podcast couldn’t be more appropriate.

Sandra Shaw is smart, engaging, vibrant, and a truly delightful guest.  Further, in addition to being an avid runner, tennis player, reader, and writer, she is also a mommy; so, needless to say, she is a woman on the move.  Sandra Shaw is determined to reach for the stars as much as she studies them—a true role model!!

Raised in Texas, Deshon Allen parlayed his gymnastics and performance background into a spot as a college cheerleader, and he fell in love with it!!  Deshon has had his own significant accomplishments in the world of cheer, such as becoming an All American Cheerleader AND a Collegiate Championship Cheerleader.  However, his love of being in the spotlight is second to his love for building up others and his community.  Not only has Deshon created a solid career for himself in the world of cheer, currently working as the Director for the Palm Beach Makos Cheerleaders, but he has also built himself a solid reputation as a man around town who has the drive to get things done!

#38 – TEACHER – Sara Trovinger - 2015-08-08

Sara Trovinger on the Curve the Cube Podcast

Sara Trovinger discovered her creativity at an early age and was encouraged to explore it as much as she was trained in harnessing it.  She is a prolific musician and soon-to-be novelist—both of which make her pretty special.  However, what makes Sara so particularly lovely is that she has decided to utilize her talents for the care of our most vulnerable children; she is a special education teacher.

Working with children who are medically fragile, wide-ranging developmentally, and full of life that can be difficult to unlock is a practice that Sara admits is challenging and oftentimes heavy.  But, she brings the greatest level of joy and tenderheartedness to her classroom that one could imagine.  She is simply a wonderful human being, and her life is a true inspiration!

This episode of Curve the Cube is sponsored by Little Smiles of Florida!  Little Smiles helps kids right here in our own neighborhoods who are struggling through something that no kid should ever have to deal with.  They work with the professionals closest to them to identify ways to put the little smiles on their faces.  Whether donating Christmas presents to children in shelters, bringing toys to children in local hospitals, raising money for a converted vehicles, or whatever else they can do… they do!  But, they do it with YOUR help.  Please donate to their wonderful cause!

#37 – ARTIST & NOVELIST – Carlos Aleman - 2015-08-01

Carlos Aleman on the Curve the Cube Podcast

Carlos Aleman is a Cuban-American man hailing from New York who makes his home now in south Florida—pursuing his creative passions of art and writing.  He is prolific in his art production—it simply lives within him; and, his novels have been not only well-received, but critically acclaimed!  I find his scope of talent as fascinating as someone who can play a bunch of instruments—it’s simply part of his DNA.

The concept of his upcoming art exhibit is Dark Chocolate—essentially exploring the beauty of our differences that really make us all the same.  It’s simply a beautiful message, and I hope everyone heads out to his exhibit!  It will be on August 28th starting at 6:30pm at the Sunrise Civic Center.

You can find the info on his upcoming exhibit here! (Cosplay wear is encouraged!)  And, for more info on his critically-aclaimed novels, head here!

#35 – CHRISTIAN HIP HOP – JDUB (Jeff Williams) – 2015-07-19

JDUB (Jeff Williams) on the Curve the Cube Podcast

After an adolescence of bad choices mixed with blossoming hip hop stardom, JDUB (Jeff Williams) found his faith and matched his message to his music.  His natural talent has gained him recognition as a gifted MC, nominated in 2013 for “Best Gospel Hip Hop Artist of the Year” by the South Florida Gospel Music Awards and winning 2013 Song of the Year for “Superstar.” His music is simply REALLY GOOD!!!

Meeting and talking to JDUB was a real treat, because he’s not only pursuing one passion in his life, but has figured out how to beautifully marry TWO: his music and his message of the power of God to change lives.  He is as equally humbled by his success as his is driven to expand his music’s reach.  Be sure to head to his website and sign up for his newsletter.  His next album, simply called “The Five Album,” is hopefully dropping this year, and his newsletter is a great way to find out first!  Trust me, JDUB gave me a lengthy preview of the album, and every bit I heard was AMAZING!!! So, you DON’T want to miss it!!  And, also be sure to follow him on social media (@JDUB561):

#33 – TRANSGENDER – Drew - 2015-06-20

Drew, Female to Male Transgendered Individual on the Curve the Cube Podcast

My dear friend, Drew, opens up with me on this podcast about his journey as a female-to-male transgendered individual—the physical, financial, social, and emotional impact and struggles the transgender life brings.  Simply speaking, it is not easy.  Imagine all the rigors and stresses of everyday life compounded and magnified by the very body you are in being at odds with both your mind and society’s expectations.  Every step out into the world to tackle those everyday tasks becomes an awkward dance of considerations: how you dress, how you act, who to talk to, etc…--all because your gender identity is more complex than the XX versus XY boxes we have been accustomed to.

The purpose of Curve the Cube is to inspire people to pursue their dreams by interviewing and picking the brains of those who are living their dreams.  Typically, topics of the podcast stay within the realm of professional or hobby-like passions: owning a business, supporting yourself as an artist, etc…  However, I can think of no dream pursuit that requires more literal blood, sweat, and tears than that of a transgender person trying to find their way into the right body and out of the shadows.

Most of us are very lucky.  The journey into a body that physically matches the mind inside is usually accomplished for us in the privacy of a womb—without any effort on our part whatsoever.  For some, though, that journey is public and arduous.  I can’t thank my friend, Drew, for not only sharing his story, but also being so open and honest.  He has asked to remain anonymous due to his professional pursuits, which is just an honest reflection that there is more understanding and acceptance to come from our society.

This is definitely the longest podcast episode thus far, though I tried to edit it down for time as much as possible.  The message is just so important and involves so many elements I never before considered, that I wanted Drew’s story to be told as fully as I could.  I encourage all to hear the whole episode!

For transgender resources, this page on GLAAD’s website is a good place to start.  I hope we all end with compassion…

#27 – SALON OWNER - Janice Massey – 2015-05-12

Janice Massey Block

When Janice first moved to south Florida from New York, she was fully surprised to find that the natural hair movement making afros and dreadlocks a nondescript commonality in the Boroughs hadn’t yet found its footing down here.  Janice sought to change that.  Parlaying her talent for styling natural hair into independent shop ownership with such a bold initiative in mind was no easy course to navigate; but, such nonsense doesn’t stop Janice.

In the podcast she discusses the challenges that came with being on her own and the moment she realized, though already on good footing, she had to listen to her gut and majorly shift course.  She turned her whole game plan for her salon on its head (no pun intended) and now couldn’t be happier!

Always purpose-seeking and driven, Janice Massey is a force to reckon with; she is an inspiration to small business owners and independent women alike!  She not only now owns her own salon, but has also started a t-shirt line and sells consignments.  This girl is unstoppable!  Find and follow her journey on:

#26 – FISHERMAN – Paul Varian - 2015-04-24

Paul Varian

From a dream conceived to a life lived, Paul Varian is a clear case of following a passion and making a career out of it! When he was a kid, Paul told his folks that he wanted to grow up to catch fish--and, catch fish he does!

Splitting time between spear fishing and guiding reef tours during down times, Paul has figured out how to make his dream a reality.

He gets to spend every day in the salt and sun if the sea--catching every range of Florida fish. And, some of his catches are truly hell. Let's face it, some fish can be pretty badass, and when in the water, we're in their territory. Couple that with a water pressure environment our squishy human bodies weren't built for, and you have a recipe for potential disaster.

The Weather Channel capitalized on the high-seas drama of spear fishing last year with Catching Hell--and, Paul was cast as a star! Though a second season is currently on hold, watch out for any announcements on Facebook or WeatherChannel.com!  (You can also find old episodes on Ora TV!)

#25 – ARTIST – Jason “JaFleu” Fleurant - 2015-04-25

Jason "JaFleu" Fleurant Block

A child of Haitian immigrants doesn’t often believe that a sustainable living as an artist is even conceivable. But, Jason "JaFleu" Fleurant is a prime example of a person breathing a dream to life one creative step at a time. And, it’s not all about courange for Jason (“JaFleu” as he is known in artistic circles).  No, it is simply his undeniable NEED to paint—to create—to express.  And his joy comes from living his emotions out loud on canvas for all the world to see and be moved by.

A community man, he finds ways to not only trail blaze for the people around him, but to inspire children to break to the expectations of their own lives.  He opens up their eyes and minds to possibilities, and opens their hearts to their dreams.

JaFleu is an inspiration to his neighborhood, the Haitian community, and humanity as a whole!  Find and follow him on:

Zach Rance Block

Zach Rance is a great example of a person living out loud, in the moment, and 100% as himself.  From deciding to enter the world of “reality” television in the Big Brother house to now putting much of his life on a live stream through younow.com, what you see with Zach is what you get.  He speaks his mind, wears emotions on his sleeve, and doesn’t give a crap what people think.

What I find most fascinating about Zach, however, is how determined he is to build his own successes and how he has thought outside the box to do it!  Though he didn’t strategize for his #BB16 afterlife before going into the house, through using social media and capitalizing on his creative thinking, Zach has managed to maintain and build his online following of fans, affectionately referred to as “Zacharoos.” On this podcast, he shows these fans much love, talks a bit about his family, lets out some feelings about the House, and much more.  Though his passion may come across a bit rough around the edges, Zach is a true sweetheart with a genuine spirit.

I’m a big fan of Zach’s belief of being himself and working hard to keep his momentum going.  With his putting out music, entertaining his fans daily, and crafting his debut book, it is hard to imagine looking back several years from now and not seeing Zach as a fully accomplished, self-made man.  He is on a skyrocket right to the top! Find him on SnapChat, Twitter, and Instagram as @RanceyPants!

#23 – RADIO – DrunkCast with Kevin Rolston at the South Florida Fair - 2015-01-16

Kevin Rolston at SFF

Holy cannoli, #KVJNation!  I am sooo happy to bring you this anniversary treat: a BONUS Curve the Cube podcast episode especially for you!!  We started a campaign a year ago to bring back our favorite morning radio show, the KVJ Show, and WON!  So, though this audio was recorded at the South Florida Fair back in January, its release (and Kevin Rolston’s permission to finally do so) is just perfectly timed!  So, what happens when you combine Kevin, a voice recorder, and a fiesty KVJ Nation interviewer named Shawntai?  GREAT audio!

After hearing this, there should be no more doubt or naysaying as to the Show’s motivation (and NEED) to make a move to Miami. As ill-fated as it was, Kevin makes it clear that it was the Show’s and their fans’ BEST option.  In the end, we got them back to the Palm Beaches.  So, that other broadcasting company really missed out.  But, thank you to Palm Beach Broadcasting and 97.9 WRMF for bringing back our crazy radio family. Kevin chants for fan and makes a really incredible deal with KVJ Nation Terry that you won’t believe!!!

#22 – SINGER – Candice Hoyes - 2015-04-14

Candice Hoyes Block

Candice Hoyes is a classically trained jazz singer born in Jamaica, raised in Florida, and exploding onto the New York jazz scene.  Equally elegant and strong, Candice’s voice is charismatic and intriguing; and, in her debut album, On a Turquoise Cloud, she sings like a melodic ribbon carefully woven through and dancing with the big band jazz instruments accompanying her.

Having known her since we were kids, it was always a privilege to see and hear Candice perform.  Her voice is simply magnificent; but, catching up with her now was amazing!  For her album, she didn’t just choose easy standards or even the most known songs from her muse, Duke Ellington.  Nope…  Not this Candice Hoyes!  She did her research and found some rare Duke Ellington tracks that could express her musical journey in an innovative way.  The album is complete in its offerings of a fully-executed concept, highly talented and accomplished instrumental accompaniments, and stunningly eclectic vocals.  On this podcast, she talks about the experiences that developed her as an artist, her choices in developing her voice and album, and the adventures through the New York music scene.

She isn't just out of this world; Candice Hoyes is #?OnATurquoiseCloud! Be sure to check out her debut album on iTunes or Google Play!

#19 – RADIO – Jason Pennington - 2015-03-19

Jason Pennington Block

Episode #19 features Jason of the KVJ Show! This radio personality truly is an ultimate example of taking life by the horns and riding that thing to the fullest! He became a member of the show through a random chance at a contest, and the rest is history!

The KVJ Show

Jason brings the weirdness level of the show up several notches--doing stunts involving everything from a pelican to a MASSIVE container of popcorn. (These two were never in the SAME stunt; so, no worries.)

He wraps his personal hobbies into the show, as well. Jason has a production company he calls Sasquatch Recordings through which he releases the most peculiar, quirky, and ultimately funny and entertaining music, videos, and movies. (Yours truly dies in one of them; so check out his stuff, also looking up "The Value Meal Killah and the Snack Pack," to see it for yourself!)  His "Elf on the Shelf" "tribute" song, "What Does the Elf Say?," even garnered him some out-of-state death threats!

The Value Meal Killah and the Snack Pack performing at Beer Fest 2014 in West Palm Beach, FL.

He goes big every time, plays hard, and pushes boundaries, but always with the best of intentions and heart.

Catch the KVJ Show weekday mornings from 6-10 on 97.9 WRMF. You should also download the WRMF app, so you can listen to past shows and watch/listen to their hilarious KVJ TV content.

#18 – PODCASTING AND MULTIMEDIA – Adam Rymer, President of Nerdist – 2015-02-28

Adam Rymer of Nerdist Block

It's the PRESIDENT of Nerdist Industries, Adam Rymer, and I couldn’t have been more excited to talk to him!!  He grew up down here in sunny south Florida, but has seen his career skyrocket—including making The Hollywood Reporter’s 2007 “Next Generation” list of the top 35 entertainment executives under the age of 35.  Adam joined Nerdist a year ago and is positioned as one of the top cutting edge trend setters for this next phase of entertainment’s digital age.

On this podcast, Adam discusses the business strategies he’s employing to grow Nerdist from a podcast by Chris Hardwick, Matt Mira, and Jonah Ray, to a fully integrated and dynamic media enterprise.  The details he shares for cross-branding, cross-marketing, and overall business mechanics are pure GOLD!!!  Even better (for me, at least), he also gives great tips for building a podcast!!!

His career started out in management consulting; but, after a journey of soul-searching, Adam realized his passion was in entertainment.  And, the rest is history!  He is not only shifting the gears on multimedia trends, he’s exploring film production.  (Check out his film The Rover, 2014.)  If you are a business person, an entertainer, in marketing, a podcaster, or just have an overall interest in super cool people, this podcast is for you!

I am a HUGE fan of Nerdist.  In fact, that podcast was my inspiration for starting Curve the Cube.  So, I truly can’t thank Adam enough for doing it!!!  Pine Crest Panthers for LIFE!!!  Enjoy!

#17– SMALL BUSINESS – The Pizza Girls – 2015-02-13

The Pizza Girls Block

You can take The Pizza Girls out of New York, but you can't take the New York out of their pizza!

Transplanted in the 90s, Jennifer and Phoebe promised West Palm the most authentically New York pizza experience. They soon realized their newfound love of Florida, and have been delivering on that promise ever since! Located on the end of Clematis Street, where the fountains meet the heart of downtown, the Pizza Girls restaurant has THRIVED!!!

Along with their hard work and successes building a small business, the Girls have reaped the benefits of their location's rejuvenation and vibrancy. There is always something (or, oftentimes, several somethings) going on just steps from their doorway. And, their patrons LOVE it!! (Trust me: there is nothing better at an outdoor festival or on a party night than a slice of their Hawaiian, a personal fave.)

Jennifer and Phoebe really opened up on this podcast, too. Not only do they offer stories that every business can relate to and gain from, but they also delve into some areas of their personal lives that I was so honored to hear about.

So, sit back and enjoy this podcast. Like their pizza, the Girls offer up every ounce of realness that the New York in them can supply!!

So, head to their website, www.PizzaGirls.com.  You can literally click on their images to have them say “Hello”!

The 2015 Shock Pop Comic Con was off the CHAIN, and I got some FANTASTIC audio!!!  I got to meet stars from some of my FAVORITE iconic movies and TV shows, like American Horror Story, Gremlins, The Karate Kid, Sons of Anarchy, Friday the 13th, and more!!!  Oh… my… gosh… my mind is still blown!!!

I asked Naomi Grossman about transitioning between two completely different seasons on American Horror Story, met Ari Lehman, the ORIGINAL Jason Voorhees ON Friday the 13th, got an autograph of Ralph Macchio for a friend, and did sooooooo much more!  I even picked up a light-up Hello Kitty t-shirt.  I mean… it was INSANE!!!

This was my virginal Comic Con experience, and I’m so glad my brother got to come in town to experience it with me.  We had an absolutely incredible time!!!  We even got to talk to Dr. Who AND witness an interview with G.E.A.R. Radio and Robert Englund up close and personal.  It was AWESOME!!!

So, when the man behind the mask agreed to take the time out of his hectic schedule to talk to me about just how he creates his craft, I was all in!!  We ended up only being able to offer you guys a podcast over the phone due to scheduling conflicts (and I really try to avoid “phone”casts), but it was well worth it!  He talks not just technique, but inspiration—the real spirit of EDM.  He shares details about his growth in the industry, how he has journeyed from being a radio DJ to EDM artist, and what defines his music today.

Now, DJ John Hitta is facing the opportunity of a lifetime! He has a chance to represent Florida at the Hard Rock Rising festival in Barcelona, Spain!!  This would be an amazing opportunity for him to play to a crowd of over 60,000, and it is up to all of his fans (like YOU!) to get him there.  So, check out his music on ReverbNation or SoundCloud (some of which is FREE to download).  Then, click here to quickly cast your vote!  Seriously, it’s super easy…

Send DJ John Hitta to Hard Rock Rising!

Let’s do this, EDM family!!!  Let’s rise up as #HittaNation!!!  And, don’t forget to follow him on Twitter to keep up with his show schedule. Happy Friday the 13th, everybody!!

#13 – Musician – Charles Milling - 2015-02-01

Charles Milling BlockBorn in New Orleans, Charles Milling’s raw talent and positivity mix with his resume of musical education and influence to deliver soul-searching tunes that rock the spirit!!!  He is a professional performer, music arranger, and producer, and leads a group of explosively talented musicians in the band, Live Hymnal, every week at St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church in Boynton Beach, FL.

Through Live Hymnal, he takes old classic Christian hymns and creates band arrangements for them that are rhythmic and infectious.  It’s a truly unique musical experience that everyone should get a taste of!  In fact, I give you a small tease of Charles’ music at the end of the podcast.  Once you’ve heard it, it will be hard for you to resist downloading more!!!

#12 – Reporter for The List – Dan Corcoran - 2015-01-21

Dan Corcoran Block

Meet Dan Corcoran--one of the reporters for south Florida's division of Scripps' The List! Coming from a hard-hitting news background traveling the country, Dan's "Around South Florida" segments are a window into how he is getting his south Florida footing through some really random local finds!

The List is an entertaining trending topics show with funny and often nostalgic pop culture references sprinkled throughout. Through their locally-based "Around Town" segments, each market gets a more in-depth focus on its own backyard.  The show's motto is "There’s the news… and then there’s THE LIST."; and in south Florida, that often gets uniquely interesting. Dan's "Around South Florida" segments allow him to explore the local eateries, events, and other goings-on that make south Florida so captivating; and, Dan’s reporting is super sweet and charming!

Enjoy his podcast and then tune in to The List weeknights! In south Florida, that would be on WPTV Channel 5 at 7pm. Otherwise, check your local listings!

#11 – CTCKids – DJ & Music Composer – Alex Ariete (Alexander Popovics) - 2015-01-20

Alex Ariete (DJ Pop Drop)

Super-charged with youthful energy and electric talent, Alex Ariete (Alexander Popovics, formerly DJ Pop Drop) is primed and ready to take over the world of EDM!  At only 12 years old, Alex is better known as DJ Pop Drop and has played to crowds of THOUSANDS!!!  Sun Fest and the Vanilla Ice Block Party are just TWO of the venues where this young artist has wowed and entertained!

Under the guidance of DJ Supreme1 and through high-level music schooling, Alex has become a formidable DJ.  I have personally had the privilege of watching and hearing some of his performances first-hand.  He’s INCREDIBLE!!! Check out his performances on YouTube and his tracks on SoundCloud; then, go see him live!  He…is…AWESOME!!!

At this stage in his career, he feels he has outgrown the “DJ Pop Drop” persona and is ready to launch into the next phase of his career under a new name.  He shared it with me off the record, and it is perfect!  I can’t wait to see this next phase take off, as I KNOW it will!!

Watch for the announcement of his new DJ name and his album, both coming soon!

#10 – ACTOR – Amir Arison – 2014-12-26

Amir Arison Block

This tenth episode of the Curve the Cube podcast features Amir Arison, also known as "Aram" on NBC’s The Blacklist!!! I had the privilege of going to high school with Amir and getting to see his theatrical potential ignite from an early age. He was simply a STAR!

To watch Amir’s career really blossom and take off over the last several years has been UNBELIEVABLY exciting!! He has breathed life into roles on stage in such productions as The Muscles in Our Toes and on screen with appearances in hits like Jane Wants a Boyfriend, Girls, American Horror Story, Homeland, and Law & Order SVU.  His role as the enthusiastic and precise, yet nervous and self-conscious, Aram on The Blacklist has solidified his national spotlight.  Amir’s years of experience in the entertainment industry have already afforded him a great deal of wisdom, sage advice, and hilarious stories, and he shares so much of all that right here.

Talented, handsome, funny, and charming, Amir is on a bright rise to the top as both an actor and a promising director.  I am so grateful that, on his way up, he stopped by the podcast to reminisce and lend us a dash of his humor and wit to this episode.  Amir lives in New York, but is a Florida boy at heart, and he was so gracious to open his parents’ home to me during the holidays for this podcast.  You are in for a great mix of both laughs and insightful nuggets!

Enjoy!
