#106 - NEWS and CULTURE - Jason Parsley - 20161125

Jason Parsley, Executive Editor of the South Florida Gay News on the Curve the Cube Podcast

I recorded this podcast with Jason Parsley, Executive Editor of the South Florida Gay News about a month ago, guys, and I'm so excited to finally bring you this episode! We first met on episode #102 when Jason lent his voice to the post-election protest in downtown West Palm Beach. I loved his passion for his cause and just HAD to have a guested episode with him!

As the Executive Editor of the South Florida Gay News, Jason lends his journalism talents to depicting gay life down here in south Florida. He strives to strike a balance between being gay community-focused, while also presenting people in a broader sense to remind us all that sexual orientation and the issues that go along with that aren't the only ways to define people. With a wide reach of TOPICS ranging from entertainment to politics (and all the blurry lines in between), there are a host of interests in the South Florida Gay News sure to keep you reading and in the know!!

Thanks so much for listening. Remember to find you passion and do your thing with the Curve the Cube podcast!!

#105 - SOLOCAST - The Story of How I Got Here - 20161128

Curve the Cube Podcast 105 - The Story of How I Got Here - 20161128

Guys!! I was invited to present recently at a Center for Autism and Related Disabilities at Florida Atlantic University's Career Day, and it was wonderful. One of my career goals is public speaking, and this was my first dive into it. I was such impressive company--other presenters including an environmentalist, event planner, comic book illustrator, creator of an online social community for the disabled, and a police officer. So, THANK YOU to Mr. Darius Murray, CARD's Clinical Mentoring Associate, for having me. It was such an epic honor!!

But, I only got to talk for about 10 minutes (and, you guys know I can TALK!). Since I really had to rush through my story and its lessons, I decided to flesh out a whole solocast for you. On this episode, I share how and why I changed my career, the journey I took to get to where I am (so far), and some advice on how to do the same yourself. (Hint: It involves a LOT of hard work!)

I have included my actual Career Day Powerpoint presentation as a bonus download, in case you want to check that out as well. And, there are so many opportunities to positively and powerfully /impact youth with autism. Reach out to Darius by phone at 561-213-6936 or by email at dmurra23@fau.edu. Or, head to Autism.FAU.edu.

#102 - SOCIOCULTURAL - Veterens Day, Donald Trump, & the American Dream - 20161111

Veterens Day, Donald Trump, & the American Dream on the Curve the Cube Podcast

Curvists and new listeners, the foundation of a pursuit of dreams for many is the American Dream itself, and there is really no dream more emblematic or inspiring around the world than that beacon America has been as a place where hope meets hard work.

But, we find ourselves at a time in our American history where masses of people feel like that American Dream is at grave risk for them. And, this election (and, for many, Donald Trump himself, is a driving force of either a promise newly lost or a promise newly regained.

So, as I heard of an anti-Trump protest on Veterans Day right here in West Palm Beach (and, a bubbling counter-protest), I decided to head down there and see what those dreams are for people. There is a clear passion involved in both protesting and counter-protesting, and I wanted to get to the root of some of this passion. And, I was as struck by the diversity of answers as I was by the possible areas of common ground that seemed to surface.

So, my hope with this episode is to allay fears, but inspire action; to propose areas of commonality, so we can focus on continuing to progress as a unified, strong country and world leader; and to help people understand one another's struggles better. We really need to stop living only in our individual pockets. As diverse of a country as we have, we need to step out and listen to one another more. And, I hope we can all be more active toward that American dream that unites us all.

#101 - SOLOCAST - The Importance of Doing What You Dream - 20161105

Curve the Cube Podcast - The Importance of Pursuing Your Dreams

Established Curvists and new listeners alike: your host and producer shares a message of the importance of doing what you dream on this episode of Curve the Cube!

People get taken off their course in life for all sorts of reasons. But, whether as a hobby, a part-time gig, or as a full-time thing, doing what you love is simply vital to one's spirit, and we can't allow ourselves to forget that. I mean, the alternative is to live every day in black-and-white, instead of the vibrant color that could await you. And, since we all only get one walk through this life on Earth, we shouldn't waste it, right?

In this podcast, I discuss not only the importance of feeding your soul with what you love, but to do so smartly and with measured risk, if, like me and some other curvists, your goal is to make a living off of your dream and your dream alone. And, I share what pursuing my own dream has meant in my life: the opportunities I've had come my way, the people I have met, and the conversations with guests that have really touched my life. None of that would have happened had I never stepped out and pursued my dream.

The road hasn't always been easy, and I share some of the particular difficulties and challenges I have faced. Pursuing your dream, quite simply, is really, really hard. But, at the end of the day, when you are doing what you love, every bead of sweat and lost hour of sleep is completely worth it!!

"When you're not practicing those things that are really authentic to you and you're just giving all of your time to these other things that are pulling you off of your path and the person that's aching to be you, then you have to fill the void with a lot of junk food for the soul." ~ Tami Stronach from episode #100 and star of The Neverending Story

#100 – ENTERTAINER – Tami Stronach - 2016-10-28

Tami Stronach of The Neverending Story on the Curve the Cube Podcast

If you're anywhere NEAR as big of a fan as I am of my FAVORITE movie of all time, The Neverending Story, then you will LOVE hearing me chat with Tami Stronach. (I mean, it's not every day you get to talk to a childlike empress!) And, it’s not every day you get to talk to a star you’ve admired for 30+ years on your 100th episode. I was absolutely beside myself.

And, what a wonderful conversation we had! Tami is as equally driven as I am to spread the message of the importance of doing what you dream. In this podcast, we explore how the film for each of us (her as a participant and me as a spectator) has influenced our lives and encouraged us to do just that. She was absolutely delightful and just a pure joy to talk to. This podcast came about following an exchange she and I had on Twitter after I took my son to a special screening of The Neverending Story. It was a magical experience for me to see it on the big screen for the first time, to be able to pass on the hope of the film to my son, and to then have that experience connect me with Tami. It was so amazing, and I hope it’s the first of many great conversations with her!!

Tami has since spent her life in the love of dance with her studio and production company, Tami Stronach Dance, in which she puts together very expressive and beautiful performances. She and her family have also started the Paper Canoe Company, in which they focus on media for young children. They have their first album coming out soon; so, be sure to look out or that!!

#98 - Updates and the Future of the Curve the Cube Podcast - 20161016

Host Jaime Announces and the Future of the Curve the Cube Podcast

Hi, Curvists! I really need to update you all on what's going on! There was no episode last week. (Eek!!) Well, there was a reason for that named Hurricane Matthew. So, I wanted to share with you all what is going on and what is coming up, including a new direction I am taking the podcast in. So, I'm excited to get into it!!

I am working to reschedule with Jared Easely, founder of the Podcast Movement annual conferences and something called the Podcast Cruise, which I have no idea what it is, but it sounds amazing, and I can't wait to talk to him. I know a lot of you were particularly excited for that episode. We were supposed to record just before his podcast MeetUp of the Podcast South Florida a couple of Saturdays ago on the 8th. But, the venue had to cancel the event, due to the hurricane. So, that of course meant my podcast with him that was supposed to happen right beforehand has to now be rescheduled. So, we are working that out.

Local small biz and digital marketing powerhouse, Kate Volman was to be on as well. She's a content creator and web show host who is on her way to taking over south Florida. She helps businesses share their stories as part of their marketing efforts, is super smart, and a lot of fun. But, we are having to reschedule, again because of things being just thrown off course, lol.

But, both of those episodes are still coming up!

So, because of recent events, I wanted to share with you a lesson I have learned about keeping my priorities in check. I am a big-time planner. Between my marketing company and clients and growing that, this podcast, my Podcast Network and sister shows, and the Palm Beach Podcasters, my to do list is gargantuan. So, I HAVE to be a big-time planner and schedule as much as possible weeks in advance. For the most part, this is a one-woman show. So, if I don't do it, it doesn't get done. I'm currently considering ways of reducing that workload, but that's for a whole other conversation. AND, I'm (most importantly, and as many of you know) also a single mom to a beautiful 4&1/2 year-old little boy, Jordon--my angel and whole heart.

So, as you can imagine, he comes first, everything else comes second, friends and family get peppered throughout as much as I can, and then my needs usually come last. My plate is simply crazy-full! I had already put on pause pretty much all of my duties as the social media person behind the KVJ Show's fan accounts, KVJNation, because something had to give. I mean, that should tell you right there the fullness of my plate right now, if I've temporarily set aside something that I love that much.

So, my cup already runneth over, and my body was suffering the consequences. Lack of sleep and healthier eating coupled with more stressors than I could speak of (all good things, but come on, let's get real, still stressful, right?), September turned into the Month of the Migraine, with my having more days WITH these debilitating headaches than not. In fact, at one point, I was in the fetal position for about a day and a half. It was awful.

With everything suddenly being thrown off by the massive Hurricane Matthew having this area in its crosshairs, my schedule was thrown out the window, I had to scramble to get hurricane-ready because I had to make sure Jordon was well set, I had to set some clients up for the hurricane because, yes, hurricanes impact marketing efforts, too. So, everything was suddenly just completely nuts and unpredictable.

After getting myself and my clients hurricane-ready, I still had so much more on my plate--even more than usual because of the total disruption that is a major hurricane. I had a choice to make, a fork in the road, so to speak. Have a complete panic-induced meltdown, or just accept it for the opportunity it was: the chance to relax. Sometimes in the hustle and bustle of the hustle itself, we get so caught in the momentum--especially when great things are happening, that we lose sight of the bigger picture. We pursue our dreams, ultimately, in the pursuit of happiness, right? Well, if my body is screaming at me that it needs rest, and that message is being delivered in the form of relentless migraines, mama is NOT happy. I looked around my room. With plywood covering the windows for the hurricane, it was like a cave--a perfect little recuperative nest free of light.

So, once it was clear we had been spared by Matthew (thank GOD!!), I had Jordon spend a couple of days with his dad, so I could spend a couple of days under covers with an ice pack on my neck to knock out my migraine once and for all. I succumbed, and it was definitely the right decision. Not only did I reenergize, but it gave me a chance to step back and see the forest--not just the trees I was usually caught up in. I thought through how to move forward while making my rest more of a priority.

So, I've taken some time to concentrate now on just finishing getting EHAH, a new podcast project off the ground. It's something some friends of mine and I have just recently launched where we talk about putting tech into our community and the community into our tech. But, getting it rolling has been a massive responsibility. And, being able to focus on finishing that rollout now while taking advantage of this gap in Curve the Cube, has taken a load of the pressure off! So, if you like tech talk, please had to EggHeadsAHP.com and subscribe to us in iTunes. In fact, the aforementioned Kate Volman is one of my Egg Head cohosts. So, that podcast can give you an intro into my upcoming Curve the Cube episode with her!

I have also made a decision with CTC that I hope you will all find interesting and appealing. I have decided to spend more episodes doing exactly what I'm doing now--sharing my own Curve the Cube journey.

Since this podcast started as being all about inspiring people to pursue their dreams by talking to other people who are doing just that and has sprouted a shunt to this parallel story of me curving my own cube, I decided to start doing just what I'm doing here: sharing more of my own journey to curving my own cube. In episode 93, my amazing compadres, Scotty Fusion and Jessica Prestige, helped by cohosting and asking me a bunch of questions from themselves and some listeners. And, I think I caught a bug for it in that episode and really just want more personal interaction and conversation with you guys, my fellow Curvists, about what it is to pursue your dreams--stuff my guests have taught me about that pursuit and what I've been learning here as I navigate my own.

In fact, on episode 4 of EHAH, which comes out October 25th, I talk a little bit about a recent decision I made on whether or not to archive my early episodes of Curve the Cube and why or why not. So, that was an interesting thought process I shared there. So, this slightly evolved structure will help me stress less about my guest scheduling and concentrate more on bringing better quality in overall content and audio. So, by adding in interviews with myself, it should help me be able to slow down and give better focus on post-production.

But, have no fear! I am continuing to bring you great traditional CTC content, and once episodes start back up in the next week or two, I'll be back to posting episodes every week! In addition to the rescheduled guests, I also have other super inspiring people lined up to motivate you to find your passion and do your thing, too!

Jennifer McGrath
She is the Director of Hearing the Ovarian Cancer Whisper, a local non-profit that raises money to help those fighting ovarian cancer who are experiencing financial difficulty. And, she has a unique story of her own for why she is passionate about helping others with ovarian cancer.

Tami Stronach
If you're anywhere NEAR as big of a fan as I am of my FAVORITE movie of all time, The Neverending Story, then you will LOVE hearing me chat with Tami. I mean, it's not everyday you get to talk to a childlike empress!

And, to add one more to the list, I am waiting on confirmation back from a very, let's just say, special kind of matchmaker. I can't say her name, yet, because she is waiting for approval back from her manager. But, she thinks it's likely; so, keep your fingers crossed!!

(Wow, I just realized this is a list full of ladies. Go, girl power!!)

I am also in very early talks to get a sitdown with aerial reporter, Johann Hoffend of WPTV's Chopper 5, and Jerry Soma, who puts on the Feast of Little Italy every year, no small task!!

So, like I said, loads of great stuff coming, guys. So, no worries, friends!!

In the meantime, shuffle back through the old episodes. I know some of you have missed some great guests! All of the other Egg Heads (Eddy Garcia, Aaron Wormus, and Joe Russo, have all been featured previously on Curve the Cube. I've had conversations with former pro-wrestler Glenn Ruth aka Thrasher of the Headbangers, actors from the Blacklist and Bloodline, the president of Nerdist Industries, hosts of the KVJ Show, Representative Lois Frankle,... I mean, just some really, really fascinating people!

I've had lots of other greatly inspirational Curvists on, too--from musicians to artists, entrepreneurs to writers, and so much more in between!! And, I've had really meaningful conversations with people like my friend, Drew, who shared his very personal story of gender reassignment, and my friend, Sharif, who shared insights into his Islamic faith.

And, of course, I CAN'T forget my Pod Squad with regular co-hosts, Jay Cintron and Scotty Fusion. We talk about all sorts of funny stuff, and you can find those episodes organized for you right on CTCPodSquad.com.

So, all in all, there is a great big backlog of nearly 100 episodes for you to listen back to as I get some great new content and these fantastic new guests all lined up.

Remember to keep pursuing your own dreams. Do not give up or get discouraged. Dig in, work hard, but, don't miss the forest for the trees.

Find Your Passion... Do Your Thing!!

#97 – 3D STREET ARTIST – Jennifer Chaparro - 2016-09-24

3D Interactive Street Artist Jennifer Chaparro on the Curve the Cube Podcast

Multiple award-winning street artist Jennifer Chaparro creates interactive 3D art on a spans of flat pavement, concrete, … you name it! And, her work, though physically temporary, will never leave the audience’s memory. Whether pretending to sit in a kayak about to go over a waterfall, or (as I did) practicing a balancing act on a giant crayon, I can personally testify that enjoying her interactive art is simply a joy that sticks with you. On this podcast, Jennifer explains the genius behind how she does it. Very cool!!

Jen is a fun and extremely business-savvy woman, and in this episode tells her story of how she fell out of the corporate office and into the life of 3D street art—at first accidentally; then with all the drive and gusto of a determined business owner. And, through talent, passion, and drive, she is now following her dreams all over the world!

#96 – PRO-WRESTLER – Glenn 'Thrasher' Ruth - 2016-09-20

Former Pro-Wrestling Champion Glenn "Thrasher" Ruth of The Headbangers on the Curve the Cube Podcast

Former NWA World Tag Team Champion and WWF World Tag Team Champion, Glenn “Thrasher” Ruth of the Headbangers, sat down with me and Jay “Captain KVJ” Cintron to talk about his time in the ring and how he’s working to build up the local pro-wrestling scene here in south Florida! Currently managing a YouFit gym, Glenn is also blazing a trail for others to follow his path through Enigma Pro-Wrestling.

Glenn’s accomplishments as a pro-wrestler and in the world of entertainment simply cannot be short-changed. He has the medical history full of broken bones, bruises, strains, and pops to prove he left his blood, sweat, and tears in the ring every time he performed! So, be sure to go out to an Enigma event and support his local effort to inspire the careers of others.

#94 – SPIRITUAL LIFE COACH AND YOGA TEACHER – Jennifer Martin - 2016-09-10

Spiritual Life Coach and Yoga Instructor Jennifer Martin on the Curve the Cube Podcast

I couldn’t have asked for a better person to spend a slice of my birthday podcasting with than the inspiring spiritual life coach and yoga instructor, Jennifer Martin. We met up following her yoga class at the Hilton West Palm Beach where she teaches on Saturdays, and had this very uplifting conversation.

Not only is she super-charged for spreading her life’s message through yoga and public speaking, but she is also a beautiful writer who regularly shares her inspirational and motivational musings on Instragram. Hers is definitely an account you want to follow!!), but also pens articles with messages like this:
“The best decision I’ve ever made was leaving my corporate job and opening my first yoga studio. I’ve made sacrifices, but I get intense joy from sharing my passion. I’m so grateful for all that I have, I aspire to make an even bigger impact. Be relentless in your life’s pursuit. It's a disservice to the world not to share your gifts.”

Clearly, with a message like that being so aligned with the purpose of this podcast, it was pure kismet that Jennifer and I were able to both geek out with and energize one another about the joy that is faith and following your dream!

#91 - BONUS: Updates - Happy August 27th!!!

Curve the Cube Updates - Happy August 27th!!

A year ago today, I left a job for a dream. Having built a successful career as a data analyst, I was willing to walk away from a sure thing for one reason: I found my true passion in life was elsewhere. So, after spending a couple of years laying down a foundation, I was able to take a bit of a bolder step towards a career reset, and life refresh.

Both for the time before a year ago and since then, my guests on Curve the Cube have been a constant source of excitement, inspiration, and motivation to know (unequivocally!) that I wanted that same passion and zest in life, and I was willing to work my butt off for it.

It hasn't been easy, but it has been well worth it. As this podcast comes out today, I'm not sitting home burnt out from spending a week with the weight of drudgery. Rather, I'm exhilarated, having been immersed in the world of digital marketing all week, and I am tackling the world of podcasting with full gusto. This morning, I am recording my special birthday podcast, where I've had people turn the tables and ask me questions. This afternoon, I will be hosting the first meeting of the Egg Heads After Hours podcast, a new show I am cohosting with other tech movers-and-shakers in our community: Aaron Wormus (a Guy on Clematis), Kate Volman, and Eddy Garcia of Vivid Arts. Then, I'll be headed home to work on a client's video projects and some more podcast stuff--including planning the Palm Beach Podcasters relaunch MeetUp event!

Sound exhausting? Nope... Best. Day. Ever. I will certainly feel more fulfilled laying my head on my pillow tonight than I did this same night last year. Sounds all well-worth it to me.

And, pursuing YOUR passion can be just as worth it to you! Want to be a musician? Artist? Entrepreneur? Community Organizer? Whatever it is... find it and do it!

That is the point of my mission: to encourage you to Find your Passion... Do your Thing!!

#90 – ACTOR – Claire Bronson - 2016-08-12

Actor Claire Bronson of Bloodline, The Walking Dead, Resurrection, and Containment on the Curve the Cube Podcast

Claire Bronson is an actress who keeps popping up in my favorite shows, such as Resurrection (RIP), The Walking Dead, and Bloodline (which is filmed right in our own backyard of the Florida Keys), and I was so excited to talk to her for this episode!! A long-time performer,  Claire grew up with a strong inner pull toward acting, and she has followed it all the way to success. We talk about pursuing acting and landing roles, being on these amazing sets and working with such wonderful casts, and what she sees for her future.

As the cofounder of her own acting studio, Drama Inc. in Atlanta, GA, Claire is equally focused on guiding others in what can be a very tricky and difficult field. In this conversation, she does not hold back in giving tips for others wanting to pursue their dreams—both specifically in acting and in whatever else one is passionate about. You’ll love her!!

#88 – NON-PROFIT – Palm Beach Zoo – 2016-07-30

Palm Beach Zoo on the Curve the Cube Podcast

Palm Beach Zoo’s Membership Manager, Amanda Joy, and Animal Curator, Amy Anderson, are two of the warmest, most lovely people I have ever met, and they made this podcast everything I could have hoped it would be and more! As we stood by the capybara exhibit (where I had to refrain from freaking out from pure excitement), these ladies shared their infectious enthusiasm for working with these wonderful animals. They conveyed the Zoo’s message and mission of conservation and education and how they see these animals in their care as ambassadors for their brethren in the wild. The sound of the Zoo’s animals all around us was just a symphony of confirmation of the beauty of our planet’s beautiful creatures.

How much Amy and Amanda truly love and care for the animals is completely obvious. They have a true passion for what they do, and it was a privilege to have them on! Special thanks to Naki Carter (ncarter@palmbeachzoo.org), the Zoo’s award-winning Public Relations Manager who is absolutely amazing in setting this podcast up. She and her team have really been coming up with innovative ways to promote the park and its message, including tons of real-time pics and videos on their social media feeds, special events, animal paintings, and more!!

Rewind to episode #84—a bonus episode all about the Zoo’s use of Pokémon Go to “lure” trainers to their park on Fridays to “Catch ‘em all” at their Safari Nights. It’s pretty fun and ingenious!!

This episode is dedicated to the memory of Stacey Konwiser and in honor of all the zookeepers and other zoo staff (such as Amanda and Amy) who dedicate their lives to being a voice for the care and conservation of our planet’s beautiful creatures.

#87 – ACTOR AND MUSICIAN – David Abeles - 2016-07-29

Broadway Actor and star of Matilda the Musical Dave Abeles on the Curve the Cube Podcast

I was absolutely delighted to see my old high school friend come back to the south Florida theater scene last March. David Abeles came through the Kravis Center on his Broadway tour of Matilda the Musical, playing the dominant and imposing role of Miss Trunchbull. I took my son to go see my friend do what I know he does best, and we were both so delighted by Dave’s performance and the entire cast and production! What a treat!!

Dave and I went to high school together at Pine Crest School in Ft. Lauderdale, and I always knew he would grow up to give his talents as a gift to the world. He was one of those people who just had that “it” factor; but, what makes him so special is that he is truly humble. On this podcast, he shares the story of his journey from Broward County to London to New York, and what life is like as an actor on the move!!

#86 – CTCKids – DJ & Music Composer – Alex Ariete (Alexander Popovics) – 2016-07-19

CTCKid, DJ, Music Composer, and Ballroom Dancer, Alex Ariete (Alex Popovics) on the Curve the Cube Podcast

In this episode, I catch up with young and super-talented DJ & music composer, Alex Ariete! You may remember Alex as one of my very first CTC Kid from episode 11—back when he was known by his original stage name, DJ Pop Drop. Each time I see Alex out and about, it’s incredible how much he’s grown—physically and musically. Since we last sat down, Alex has continued to develop his skills as a musician—creating new original tracks, playing a bunch of gigs, traveling for different events and things, meeting amazing EDM mentors, and collaborating with different artists.

On top of that, Alex continues to excel at his dance, competing regularly and doing very well! He’s simply a powerhouse of young, ambitious, and promising talent. On the podcast, we talk about how he’s grown musically and artistically and how important his parents’ support continues to be. Catch Alex on Palm Beach FM every other Tuesday night where he is not only a resident DJ, but is also starting to conduct his own industry interviews.

I’m so excited to see where this kid goes!

#85 – POET, WRITER, AND DIRECTOR – Jessica “Empress Prestige” McCready - 2016-07-17

Poet, Writer, and Director, Jessica “Empress Prestige” McCready on the Curve the Cube Podcast

Founder of Poetry In Motion Productions: (PIMP!), Jessica, now known as “Empress Prestige,” knows a thing or two about doing her own thing. She began what started as an unformed idea mass four years ago and worked it into what is now a thriving, repeat project of her own unique concept: ChoreoPoems.

These are forms of dramatic expression that combine poetry, dance, music and song. She conceptualizes the overall story arc, directs the talent, and produces the overall program; but, what makes her plays so unique is that she leaves creative license for each role and its expression to the individual player. Essentially, the cast writes much of the content and she threads it together into a cohesive, intelligent expression of her story.

Their next project is the 4th installment of Pleasant City Thee ChoreoPoem to be shown soon at The Palm Beach Improv and The Mozart Theatre. Also, Empress is working to bring this piece into the forum of a film called Thee Movie. So exciting!!

Her storytelling has community and cultural purpose for the enjoyment and education of every generation. Her diligence, humor, and passion are a true inspiration!

#84 – BONUS: EVENT – Pokemon Go at the Palm Beach Zoo - 2016-07-16

Pokemon Go at the Palm Beach Zoo

Welcome to a BONUS episode of the Curve the Cube Podcast. It is just a bonus, but still very worthy of a number. So, it’s #84! It’s been a while since I’ve covered an event, and this was very impromptu, but still very fun.

(To hear the last event I covered, you will have to rewind to episode #60 where I covered an art gallery opening and then pretty far back to episode #16 with the Shock Pop Comic Con.)

In THIS episode, I get to geek out about the phenomenon of Pokémon Go! There is one local spot that is taking FULL advantage: The Palm Beach Zoo! They laid down some lures and transformed their park full of Pokéstops into a Pokémon trainer’s dream. Sending out a map ahead of time, the zoo primed the local masses to get their teams together and have a #PokemonGo invasion… and it worked!!

A newbie trainer myself, I was SO JAZZED to get out there and go hunting for Pokémon. So, I had my map ready and spent a fun evening capturing Exeggcutes, Pinsirs, Poliwags, and TONS more. The fountain area was particularly littered. It was awesome!!

I stopped along the way and talked to a couple of groups of fellow trainers who were kind enough to spare a few minutes for my questions. (Thanks, guys!) We talked about the sudden craze that is Pokémon Go, getting into teams, strategy, and how much the special event drew them to be at the zoo that night. It was awesome!

There was live music, a Food Truck Invasion (shout out to Hoffman’s Chocolates!), and of course the wonderful and real-life Pokémon—the animals themselves! They absolutely remained the stars of the show!!

I’m having a full podcast with some peeps from the Zoo in a couple of weeks. It’s slated to be episode #88 and released on August 8th; but, keep in touch over social media for updates—mostly on Twitter.

But, aslo keep an eye out while playing the game yourselves! Remember to keep looking up and watching out for “No Trespassing” signs, sketchy folk, cliffs, and mall fountains. It’s just a game, people!!

This is Pokémon Go at the Palm Beach Zoo!

Enjoy!!

Since this quick, impromptu episode has no sponsor, I’ll ask you to please consider supporting the show yourself. It’s my complete pleasure to continue to bring you a show for free, and I thank my sponsors for covering most of my costs. But, there is still room for more help—and, that is where you can come in. Help me continue to keep bringing you conversations with south Florida’s most inspiring, passionate, and talented people. Any amount helps. Visit https://www.patreon.com/CurveTheCube.

#83 – PHOTOGRAPHER – Estelle DeShocka - 2016-07-01

Photographer Estelle DeShocka on the Curve the Cube Podcast

I’ve been an admirer of Estelle DeShocka’s photography for quite some time—watching her in action at various events and then seeing the amazing results online. She is quick on her feet and truly takes such great shots! I’m so glad that on this podcast, I got to finally talk to her more in depth about all the amazing photos she captures at other photo shoots and I then see her share through her various social media outlets. (My favorite was definitely the zombie wedding!)

Estelle and I get into the types of photo shoots she likes best, where she gets her great theme ideas, how she secures her models and additional vendors and more. She even gives me insight into a very valuable insides source for some of her most amazing props and locations.

She has been carrying around a camera since the time of her earliest memories. With a mom in graphic design to learn from and an unending devotion to her craft to develop her skills, Estelle is sure to continue to take her photography and career to the next level!

Myles "The Trufe" Robinson on the Curve the Cube Podcast

Raised amongst generations of musicians, Myles “The Trufe” Robinson was destined to find the rhythm of his own musical beat. I have had the pleasure of knowing Virginia Sinicki of the KVJ Show for a number of years now, and she's never ceased being an amazing source of girl power. Rapper and Hip Hop Artist Uzochi “Uzi 311” Onyejuruwa on the Curve the Cube Podcast

Uzi 311, a.k.a., “Florida’s Finest” is one of the most driven people I have ever met. #79 – REGGAE MUSICIAN – Paul Anthony II - 2016-06-10

Reggae star Paul Anthony II on the Curve the Cube Podcast

I had the pleasure of first meeting Paul Anthony at the invitation of a previous guest—Cohen Robinson—who was performing with a select group of local music talent he had gathered for his Sets in the West concert last month (catch episode #77). When I saw Paul perform, I was mesmerized. He oozes natural musicianship and was a polished performer. I was hooked and knew that I HAD to have him on the podcast!

On this episode, we talk about his “why”—what inspires him to make his music (particularly his original songs), the hustle behind booking gigs, and the work it takes to create his albums. Paul’s musical roots run deep with a father highly accomplished in the business, but he is working to pave his own path and legacy. With his band, the Reggae Souljahs, Paul is proving that south Florida continues to be a strong platform for a determined rising reggae star. Whether you want to be a musician or are just looking for the inspiration to follow your own dreams and curve your own cube, this episode is for you!!

#78 – YOGA INSTRUCTOR, MUSICIAN, AND MOTIVATOR – Jamie Scott Harris - 2016-05-27

Yoga instructor, musician, and mentor, Jamie Scott Harris, on the Curve the Cube Podcast

I met Jamie Scott Harris one random Friday when my son and I were out walking with a friend of ours and her dogs. He was meditating in the park and we eventually struck up a conversation about yoga, life, and purpose. By the end of it, I knew I had to have him as a guest! After pursuing a career in yoga instruction and finding himself in a new state, Jamie came to a new path of his journey through life. He discovered a transformational mentorship group called My Life My Power, and his life mission was suddenly and dramatically expanded. Coupled with Gratitude Training and his guitar, Jamie now leads a life focused on uplifting others in their own passions and dreams. (Sound familiar??)

In our podcast, Jamie delivers a very powerful message about finding and living your authentic self, sloughing off that which burdens you and is not working. He is full of enthusiasm about encouraging others to find what they are passionate about. In particular, he helps kids from all walks of life open up their minds to their true potentials and, in that same vein, talks about focusing one’s influence on how they can help others (“no longer ‘me’ but ‘we’”).

With a special musical treat included at the end, this podcast is perfect for anyone and everyone seeking life as a curvist!

#77 – MUSICIANS – The Cohen Robinson Experience – 2016-05-20

The Cohen Robinson Experience on the Curve the Cube Podcast

It was such a pleasure to catch up with my 8th guests (Cohen Robinson, Patrick Watkins, and Myles “Trufe” Robinson) after watching them wow the crowd at the Sets in the West Neighborhood Block Party this past Friday off of 5th Avenue in Delray! Not only did they put on a fantastic show, but they also showcased an even wider variety of talent—this time including reggae (http://www.PaulAnthonyReggae.com) and spoken word (@ByrdPoetry) performers, a full band, and Uzi—a local rap artist who joined us on this episode.

We last recorded a podcast back on December 20th, 2014 after they opened up for Vanilla Ice; and, to see how much their musicianship has continued to accelerate was phenomenal. There was a quintessential Florida storm brewing that caused a power outage and eventually cut the set short; but, these guys didn’t miss a beat or let the energy drop. They made what could have been a complete bummer into a really beautiful moment.

This episode starts off in my car with Cohen and Uzi on our way to the post-performance celebration, and we end up at Salt Seven off Atlantic Avenue. We had a fantastic time kicking back over cocktails and calamari as they basked in the afterglow of the stage. They are true professionals and even truer friends. You’re going to love this podcast!! Be sure to listen all the way to the end for a couple of special treats and to look out for their EP coming out soon.

#75 – NON-PROFIT – Darius Murray - 2016-05-03

Darius Murray, Clinical Mentoring Associate for FAU‘s CARD, or Center for Autism and Related Disabilities on the Curve the Cube Podcast

My 75th episode was spent in the delightful company of Mr. Darius Murray, Clinical Mentoring Associate for FAU‘s CARD, or Center for Autism and Related Disabilities. His passion for helping the most vulnerable in our community was obvious from the start—particularly when he talks about CARD’s iRise2 Mentoring program, which pairs young protégés (ages 11-21 or 22) with mentors from all walks of life. We discuss what the autism spectrum is, particular challenges, the rising statistics, vaccines, and more.

Darius has spent his life giving to others, having worked his way through the Homeless Coalition of Palm Beach County, AmeriCorps, and Big Brothers Big Sisters previously. So, he definitely had a lot to share with me about the importance of volunteerism generally.

Mostly, though, we talk about the iRise2 mentoring program. He is very clear that ANYONE can be a mentor (after passing a background check, of course!), and that current mentors come from all kinds of backgrounds, skillsets, and interests. And, if the mentor program is not quite someone’s cup of tea, there are so many other opportunities to positively and powerfully /impact youth with autism. Reach out to Darius by phone at 561-213-6936 or by email at dmurra23@fau.edu. Or, head to Autism.FAU.edu.

#74 – ENTREPRENEUR – Jeremy Pound - 2016-04-27

Marketing guru, author, and CEO of Juicy Results, Jeremy Pound, on the Curve the Cube Podcast!!!

My guest in (yes, really the) 74th episode features my new “professional compass,” Jeremy Pound, the CEO of Juicy Results where I recently started as their Internet Marketing Coordinator. Juicy Results. Known as the “Internet marketing agency for the Fortune Five Million, Jeremy and his Juicy Results crew specialize in solid web design and maintenance, SEO, and social media marketing. In running his company, Jeremy maintains a keen focus on company culture, and has created one like I’ve never seen, including first-day champagne bottles, a four-legged receptionist named Jackson, and an emphasis on continuous learning.

On my first day he introduced me to the Growth Mindset pioneer, Carol Dweck, by listening to her appearance on Bryan Allen’s podcast. It was astonishing to me how much I was able to connect with it, and I highly recommend that all of you listen to that on your next podcast binge. It’s a solid window into my “curvist” philosophy.
Speaking of podcasts, Jeremy hosts his own called the New Customer Machine, which he has started in conjunction with writing his next book of the same name. If you are a small business owner or are trying to expand your public profile for any other reason (ahem: artists, musicians, writers, inventors, etc…), you NEED to listen to TCM!! And, his last book, The Bootstrapper’s Guide to Search Engine Optimization, is a must-read for much of the same reason. So, pick up your copy today!!

Jeremy and I talk a lot about marketing and being an active business leader in our community, but also about his childhood creative endeavors, parental influences, and what he cringes at being called. (Spoiler alert: I TOTALLY call him it in the beginning. Ha!)

#73 – ARTIST AND PHOTOGRAPHER – Jamaal “Visualist” Clark – 2016-04-11

Artist and Photographer Jamaal "Visualist" Clark on the Curve the Cube Podcast

I met Jamaal “Visualist” Clark at an art event put on by Exhibit Treal a couple of weeks ago where he was photographing the evening. And, it turns out that he was also a painter who had lent a couple of pieces to the event—pieces that I LOVED. So, I was excited to have Jamaal on the podcast.

We sat down and talked about a whole range of topics—from comic books to graffiti, film to digital, his time in school to being a teacher now himself. And, Jamaal was delightful throughout it all. He shared with me what the name “Visualist” means, the theme behind his heart, and what mark he wants to leave in the art world. There are a lot of great nuggets in this podcast for any aspiring artist or person visualizing their own dream!!

#72 – SPACE BRAINIAC – Barry Bohnsack - 2016-04-09

Barry Bohnsack (Program Planner for the Orion Spacecraft at the Kennedy Space Center) on the Curve the Cube Podcast

Barry Bohnsack, Finance and Program Planning expert for the Orion ALTO Program, joined me by phone for this truly special podcast—one that I’ve been looking forward to for a long time!

Barry works for Lockheed Martin, which is contracted to help build the Orion spacecraft, NASA’s deep space craft. Orion is on the brink of making history, heading next to the dark side of the moon to test human capacity to survive these types of missions. Once successful, Orion will be headed on a manned mission to MARS! How cool is that?!?!

Barry started out being into all things space and science at a very young age, and realized there was a path for him to parlay his business acumen into a career at the Kennedy Space Center. As an ambassador to the First Robotics Competition, Barry and I first met a few weeks ago, where stopped by to support my previous CTC Kids guests, the Poinciana Elementary School’s Taz Bots from episode 70. And, I was so excited when he agreed to be on.

On this podcast, Barry and I talk about the history of NASA, how he managed to live his dream of working there and his role as a project planner, the commonality of both being young astronautics and Lego lovers, and what the real benefits are to society garnered from space exploration. (Spoiler alert: LOADS of technological advances!!)

He’s a lovely guy and not only did he shed some light on the budgetary considerations of the space program that come into play, but he also gave me fresh perspective on one of my favorite categories of movies: sci-fi.

I’ve wanted someone involved with NASA on my podcast since day ONE, and this was every bit of a treat that I could have imagined it to be!!

Quick note:
We MAY have accidentally mixed up Scott and Mark Kelly’s names (but, what do you want from us; they are TWINS!); it was SCOTT that just came back from space.

#71 – NON-PROFIT – JEFF DEMARIO - 2016-04-08

Jeff DeMario, CEO of Vita Nova Inc, on the Curve the Cube Podcast

This week’s guest is Jeff DeMario, Chief Executive Officer of Vita Nova—West Palm Beach’s answer to the challenges kids face as they transition out of foster care and into adulthood. Through their services and programs providing housing, education, counseling, and life skills coaching, Vita Nova helps the kids in their organization through a lot of heart, hard work, and commitment. (Side note: Everyone should check out their life skills videos. They are awesome!!)

“Vita Nova” means new life, and that is what this selfless group of people give to these kids—self-esteem and the desire and knowledge to become productive, social human beings through endless support and communications. Think back to when you were 18 and all the challenges you faced still finding yourself while also discovering the world. Add in hormones and other typical physical and social issues that you faced. Now, subtract the structured support system that you likely had. Chances are, you would not have fared so well. In fact, here are some stats:

Each year approximately 26,000 young adults "age out" of foster care in the United States, according to the Annie E Casey Foundation. Four years after aging out, 25 percent have been homeless, less than half have graduated from high school and more than 80 percent are unable to support themselves.

As Vita Nova celebrates their 10th anniversary, they need the community’s support (whether financial or volunteerism), and you can help in so many different ways! Just go to vitanovainc.org (http://www.vitanovainc.org/) or call 561-689-0035 and ask for Jeff or visit their thrift store at 3129 S Congress Ave, Palm Springs, FL 33461!

#70 – CTC KIDS – Poinciana Elementary’s Taz Bots (Lego League Kids) - 2016-03-29

CTC KIDS – Poinciana Elementary’s Taz Bots (Lego League Kids) on the Curve the Cube Podcast

I was DELIGHTED to meet with a group of kids who are competing in the First Lego League tournament circuit! Morgan Domeyer, Natasha Mayorga, Garrett Reardon, and Carsten Kjaerulff are from Poinciana Elementary and members of the “Taz Bots” team learning under the direction of their coach, Gloria Gibson. Each year, the FLL’s competitions focus on a different theme, and this year’s them is the Trash Trek Challenge.

The kids and I discuss their recent competition in February, what world challenges they’ve been asked to think through and help tackle, the awesomeness that is Lego, what they like about robotics and coding, and more! They’ve earned their way to the next level of competitions happening in May: Morgan and Natasha are representing the team headed to the FLL Razorback International in Arkansas, while Garrett and Carsten are representing the team headed to the FLL Open European Championship in the Canary Islands, Spain. So, they have a LOT to look forward to with their upcoming trips and competitions!

These kids are thoughtful, extremely bright, super sweet, adorable, and the future of robotics and engineering. I mean, just check out this website of their innovative video clips to see for yourself! You will enjoy meeting them as much as I did! They do need your help getting to this next round of competition, though, and are currently raising funds to help out with their trip. So, here’s how you can help:
GoFundMe page: https://www.gofundme.com/d5p3d

Send a check: Made out to Poinciana STEM and mail it to 1203 North Seacrest Blvd., Boynton Beach, Fla. 33435, or give to a parent of a teammate. Specify on the check memo “Tazbot Travel.”

#69 – ARTISTS AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZERS – Exhibit Treal – 2016-03-26

Jason "JaFleu" Fleurant and Tracy Guiteau of Exhibit Treal on the Curve the Cube Podcast

Treal= true + real

Utilizing the concept of “treal,” community leaders, Jason "JaFleu" Fleurant and Tracy Guiteau, are blazing a trail in our backyard to promote young, local talent—Exhibit Treal. They are both fine artists, and, as you’ll hear, Tracy also has a background in fashion design. But, they are also community leaders doing so much to share all they have learned in the bumps in the journey of an artist's life, be strong examples of fortitude, and really inspire and support the community's youth. Their Exhibit Treal events bring local artists together in a safe space free of the b.s. and typical pitfalls that can swallow up their talent, and instead give them a place to breathe and thrive.

In this podcast, Jason, Tracy, and I talk about all their events, why their mission means so much to them, and a little of what it's like growing up Haitian. It's a super fun, funny, and inspiring podcast!

And my little session at the end features Snoop Dog’s “Gin and Juice” as arranged by The Gourds. Don’t blame me for all the gritty language, blame Snoop Dog!!

So, sit back and relax and get ready to get treal! Enjoy!!

#68 – UNDERWATER PHOTOGRAPHER – Chris Gug - 2016-03-15

Chris Gug Gulielmo on the Curve the Cube Podcast

I recently had the absolute honor of sitting down with America’s premier underwater wildlife photographer, Chris Guglielmo (or simply "Gug," as he is known in most circles). Gug is one of those rare individuals who was gifted with a passion at an early age that he has continued to grow and excel at. He has been diving and photographing marine life since he was 15 years old, and in this podcast he talks about planning and conquering his shots, the secret to his vivid colors, and demystifying some common misconceptions.

The conversation took an unanticipated (yet, highly welcomed) turn toward a discussion on environmental conservation, and we discovered our mutual passion for animal rights and species preservation. Gug gets to travel the world in pursuit of the best shots, and he seems very genuine in his gratitude for living his dream.

Raised in the Bronx, painter Herbert Weintraub captures the mid-century New York neighborhood charm in his art with such warm essence, you are immediately transported into his memory. And, now that he is living in Florida, his talents are right in our backyard.

In this podcast, I talk to Herbert about how he raised 6 kids, working hard every day to make it in life as an artist. He traveled through various art show circuits; and, though not always successful, he followed his inner passion and pressed on. Now, he is highly revered and accomplished, with his work included in some very impressive collections. Herbert is sweet, charming, and quite inspiring with a Norman Rockwell-esque style of work.

#64 – GUN SHOP OWNER – Ken Bratvogel - 2016-02-20

Ken Bratvogel, Owner of Firearm Solutions, on the Curve the Cube Podcast

Ken Bratvogel is the owner and operator of a couple of gun shops—both here and in South Carolina—under the umbrella of Firearms Solutions. He’s had a passion for guns since childhood–rebuilding, cleaning, trading, and now professionally selling them. To Ken, guns are a tool and a tradition, and he is a big advocate of safety and responsibility.

I truly appreciate how open, thoughtful, and reasonable our conversation was—even when we touched on the stickier topics. He is truly a kind man, and I hope you will find his podcast as insightful as I did!

#63 – FIBER ARTIST – Gin Blische - 2016-02-06

Fiber Artist Gin Blische on the Curve the Cube Podcast

The fuzzy, meticulously-detailed, and immediately nostalgic fabric sculptures by Gin Blische will leave you equally impressed and amazed!  I had heard through the West Palm Beach grapevine (i.e., Deshon Allen) that there was so much more to Gin than I knew.  So, when I did my digging and found out about all her talents, I just HAD to have her on!

In this podcast, Gin talks about how she discovered such a unique passion and how she has made these creations come to life!  We even talked about her days heading up bands, performing with her twin sister, and so much more.  We met up at Callaros Steak House and had an amazing time!

Follow her events and latest creations on her website; and, look for her to appear at Artisans on the Ave in Lake Worth soon!

Artist April Anselona on the Curve the Cube Podcast

April Anselona is a mega-talented and driven local artist with some great advice on how to make the dream come alive! In this podcast, she talks about marching to the beat of her own artistic drum since she was little, finding direction with a fashion-centered class in high school, and developing her art style over time. She has even coined her own term, “Fashion Fusion,” to describe her style of pop-art-meets-fashion.

April shares GREAT tips in our conversation about branding her art—a very important concept for any artist looking to make a living. And, her entrepreneurial, go-getter spirit has been the other half of what keeps propelling her talents forward. You will simply learn a lot and be quite inspired by this incredible artist!!

#58 – MUSICIAN, DANCER, AND ACTOR – Tori Lynn Jones - 2015-12-29

Tori Lynn Jones on the Curve the Cube Podcast

I first met Tori Lynn backstage at WRMF’s No Snow Ball, where she and I geeked out together over seeing Adam Lambert walk down the hall toward us, and the rest was history! So, when I asked her to be on my podcast, I could think of no better place to record than in the shadows of where we met: outside of the Mizner Park Amphitheater in Boca.

A naturally-gifted singer and performance artist, Tori Lynn won her shot at opening for Adam Lambert and Third Eye Blind at No Snow Ball by winning WRMF’s Dirty Voice Contest.

From early releases like "Labyrinth of Love" and "Nobody but Me" to her latest tracks, including “Mama Said,” “Young and Free,” and “Fading Lightz,” Tori Lynn has garnered an incredible following. And, she has great affection for her fans! Her motivation is spreading positivity and inspiration, along with raising awareness for an incurable disease that has affected her family: Cystinosis. Please visit Cystinosis.org to help support her cause!

A triple threat of singing, dancing, and acting, Tori Lynn is an absolute show-stopper! Connect with her at iamtorilynn.com and watch out for her upcoming college tour. And, of course, be sure to follow her all over social media:
