Charles Milling of Live Hymnal on the Curve the Cube Podcast

Welcome to episode #111 of the Curve the Cube podcast, where I will continue to take you with me on my own journey of curving the cube and also catch up with musician Charles Milling--solo artist and Live Hymnal band leader, previously featured on episode #13. He is a visionary, marrying new sounds with the traditional church, and he and I talk a bunch about Live Hymnal's latest album, Procession while also diving into some totally curvist-aimed topics, like:
1) Dealing with industry changes you never saw coming,
2) The challenge of getting people to say, "I must have that!" about YOUR unique thing, and
3) As a creative, knowing when it's ok to end the pursuit of project perfection.

Then I take those topics to a new segment I'm calling The Learning Curve, where I share specific actionable items, tips, tricks, and pieces of advice for you to put into play as you curve your own cube.

So, buckle up for a pretty packed episode, guys!! It was my first foray into the world of editing with my new software, Hindenburg, and I was super nervous about it!!

Thanks so much for listening. Remember to find your passion and do your thing with the Curve the Cube podcast!!

#82 – Musician – Myles “Trufe” Robinson – 2016-06-28

Myles "The Trufe" Robinson on the Curve the Cube Podcast

Raised amongst generations of musicians, Myles “The Trufe” Robinson was destined to find the rhythm of his own musical beat. He uses his talent to dig into often difficult issues with a message that is always raw and real. Speaking to his most inner and honest emotions, his flows are smooth and captivating. However, it is his work ethic that has had him rising about the rest. There are no participation trophies handed out in the music industry, and Myles has put in every ounce of the hard work it takes to really make it and be taken seriously.

On this podcast, Myles talks about the importance of smart, chemistry-driven collaboration and the meaning of a hard day’s work. A young dad with more than one job, Myles is more determined than the average dreamer, and his hard work is paying off! Watch out for his upcoming projects—including “The Calm Before the Storm” with guest #80, Uzi 311.

Rapper and Hip Hop Artist Uzochi “Uzi 311” Onyejuruwa on the Curve the Cube Podcast

Uzi 311, a.k.a., “Florida’s Finest” is one of the most driven people I have ever met. Discovering his talent for rap and hip hop at an early age, Uzi focused his mind toward developing it into a true craft. He is a masterful freestyle artist, purposeful writer, and commanding entertainer who is never finished improving himself. Catch Uzi at a show, and you are catching a glimpse of the future of hip hop.

On this podcast, Uzi gives up the goods on getting your foot in the door, working hard, and making it happen! He is equally charming and insightful, and it is hard to imagine anything but pure success in this gifted artist’s future.

#79 – REGGAE MUSICIAN – Paul Anthony II - 2016-06-10

Reggae star Paul Anthony II on the Curve the Cube Podcast

I had the pleasure of first meeting Paul Anthony at the invitation of a previous guest—Cohen Robinson—who was performing with a select group of local music talent he had gathered for his Sets in the West concert last month (catch episode #77). When I saw Paul perform, I was mesmerized. He oozes natural musicianship and was a polished performer. I was hooked and knew that I HAD to have him on the podcast!

On this episode, we talk about his “why”—what inspires him to make his music (particularly his original songs), the hustle behind booking gigs, and the work it takes to create his albums. Paul’s musical roots run deep with a father highly accomplished in the business, but he is working to pave his own path and legacy. With his band, the Reggae Souljahs, Paul is proving that south Florida continues to be a strong platform for a determined rising reggae star. Whether you want to be a musician or are just looking for the inspiration to follow your own dreams and curve your own cube, this episode is for you!!

#77 – MUSICIANS – The Cohen Robinson Experience – 2016-05-20

The Cohen Robinson Experience on the Curve the Cube Podcast

It was such a pleasure to catch up with my 8th guests (Cohen Robinson, Patrick Watkins, and Myles “Trufe” Robinson) after watching them wow the crowd at the Sets in the West Neighborhood Block Party this past Friday off of 5th Avenue in Delray! Not only did they put on a fantastic show, but they also showcased an even wider variety of talent—this time including reggae (http://www.PaulAnthonyReggae.com) and spoken word (@ByrdPoetry) performers, a full band, and Uzi—a local rap artist who joined us on this episode.

We last recorded a podcast back on December 20th, 2014 after they opened up for Vanilla Ice; and, to see how much their musicianship has continued to accelerate was phenomenal. There was a quintessential Florida storm brewing that caused a power outage and eventually cut the set short; but, these guys didn’t miss a beat or let the energy drop. They made what could have been a complete bummer into a really beautiful moment.

This episode starts off in my car with Cohen and Uzi on our way to the post-performance celebration, and we end up at Salt Seven off Atlantic Avenue. We had a fantastic time kicking back over cocktails and calamari as they basked in the afterglow of the stage. They are true professionals and even truer friends. You’re going to love this podcast!! Be sure to listen all the way to the end for a couple of special treats and to look out for their EP coming out soon.

#41 – MUSICIANS – Chemradery - 2015-09-05

Chemradery on the Curve the Cube podcast

When vocalist Gregory Scot Dyer first sat to collaborate with guitarist and seasoned touring musician Ivan Alexander, the chemistry was undeniable and Chemradery was born!  When I sat to talk to them for this podcast, that natural flow of friendship and collaborative, positive energy was obvious and very endearing.  Greg and Ivan are equally enjoyed in the middle of a crowd while they command a big stage as they are simply conversing face-to-face.  Their energy and presence draw you in and their music keeps you coming back for more!

Hear them share with us how they came together, what inspires their music, how they hustle through the scene of south Florida, and their future plans; it’s simply an episode not to be missed!!!  Please support this amazing band by downloading their music, coming out and seeing their shows, and following them on social media:

#35 – CHRISTIAN HIP HOP – JDUB (Jeff Williams) – 2015-07-19

JDUB (Jeff Williams) on the Curve the Cube Podcast

After an adolescence of bad choices mixed with blossoming hip hop stardom, JDUB (Jeff Williams) found his faith and matched his message to his music.  His natural talent has gained him recognition as a gifted MC, nominated in 2013 for “Best Gospel Hip Hop Artist of the Year” by the South Florida Gospel Music Awards and winning 2013 Song of the Year for “Superstar.” His music is simply REALLY GOOD!!!

Meeting and talking to JDUB was a real treat, because he’s not only pursuing one passion in his life, but has figured out how to beautifully marry TWO: his music and his message of the power of God to change lives.  He is as equally humbled by his success as his is driven to expand his music’s reach.  Be sure to head to his website and sign up for his newsletter.  His next album, simply called “The Five Album,” is hopefully dropping this year, and his newsletter is a great way to find out first!  Trust me, JDUB gave me a lengthy preview of the album, and every bit I heard was AMAZING!!! So, you DON’T want to miss it!!  And, also be sure to follow him on social media (@JDUB561):

#22 – SINGER – Candice Hoyes - 2015-04-14

Candice Hoyes Block

Candice Hoyes is a classically trained jazz singer born in Jamaica, raised in Florida, and exploding onto the New York jazz scene.  Equally elegant and strong, Candice’s voice is charismatic and intriguing; and, in her debut album, On a Turquoise Cloud, she sings like a melodic ribbon carefully woven through and dancing with the big band jazz instruments accompanying her.

Having known her since we were kids, it was always a privilege to see and hear Candice perform.  Her voice is simply magnificent; but, catching up with her now was amazing!  For her album, she didn’t just choose easy standards or even the most known songs from her muse, Duke Ellington.  Nope…  Not this Candice Hoyes!  She did her research and found some rare Duke Ellington tracks that could express her musical journey in an innovative way.  The album is complete in its offerings of a fully-executed concept, highly talented and accomplished instrumental accompaniments, and stunningly eclectic vocals.  On this podcast, she talks about the experiences that developed her as an artist, her choices in developing her voice and album, and the adventures through the New York music scene.

She isn't just out of this world; Candice Hoyes is #?OnATurquoiseCloud! Be sure to check out her debut album on iTunes or Google Play!

This episode of Curve the Cube is sponsored by Sol Experiences—the Florida events company to enhance your SOLcial life!  Curve the Cube’s producer, Jaime, has personally been on a Palm Beach Gardens pub crawl and party-limo driven day trip to Key West that were both SUPER fun!!!  Stay posted on their events, and if you mention Flint Stone Media, you will receive a discount!

#13 – Musician – Charles Milling - 2015-02-01

Charles Milling BlockBorn in New Orleans, Charles Milling’s raw talent and positivity mix with his resume of musical education and influence to deliver soul-searching tunes that rock the spirit!!!  He is a professional performer, music arranger, and producer, and leads a group of explosively talented musicians in the band, Live Hymnal, every week at St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church in Boynton Beach, FL.

Through Live Hymnal, he takes old classic Christian hymns and creates band arrangements for them that are rhythmic and infectious.  It’s a truly unique musical experience that everyone should get a taste of!  In fact, I give you a small tease of Charles’ music at the end of the podcast.  Once you’ve heard it, it will be hard for you to resist downloading more!!!

#8 – MUSICIAN – Cohen Robinson, Patrick Watkins, & The Trufe – 2014-12-20

Cohen Robinson, Patrick Watkins, & The Trufe Block

This super-short podcast is my first multi-guess-cast and features three extremely talented up-and-coming hip-hop artists, Cohen Robinson, Patrick Watkins, & The Trufe!  Cohen and The Trufe (a.k.a., Myles Robinson) are brothers; but, they have been friends with Patrick since they were kids.  So, they consider themselves all brothers.

Whether working together on their group or doing their own individual projects, Cohen, Patrick, and The Trufe always support each other—and tonight was just another example.  Cohen Robinson had one a singing contest that gave him the opportunity to open for the Vanilla Ice Block Party, and Patrick and The Trufe collaborated with him on the performance.

This podcast was recorded backstage right after their set, where it was crazy loud, energetic, and surreal.  What an honor to be able to speak with and get to know a little bit about these guys after such an awesome moment in their lives!

Enjoy!
